Kyiv:
President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he will meet with US envoy Keith Kellogg on Thursday, expressing hopes for “constructive” collaboration with the US following former President Donald Trump’s recent criticism of the Ukrainian leader on social media.
Zelensky addressed the nation late Wednesday in his daily evening video, shortly after Trump branded him a “dictator” in remarks reminiscent of Kremlin rhetoric that have sent shockwaves through Europe and Kyiv.
“We are scheduled to meet with General Kellogg tomorrow, and it is crucial for us that the meeting and our overall work with America be constructive,” stated Zelensky.
“Together with America and Europe, we can create a more dependable peace, and that is our goal. Importantly, this is not just our goal, but a shared ambition with our partners,” he continued.
The Ukrainian leader remarked that the world’s most influential individuals — seemingly alluding to Trump — must make a “choice” between aligning with the Kremlin or pursuing peace:
“The future lies not with Putin, but with peace. It is a choice for everyone globally — especially for the powerful — to decide whether to side with Putin or to pursue peace. We must choose peace. I appreciate all the support we have received.”
He emphasized that he is “counting on Ukrainian unity,” as well as the “unity of Europe” and the “pragmatism of America.”
Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine has sought an end to the war since “the very first second” of Russia’s invasion in February 2022, aiming for a peace agreement that ensures Moscow will not launch further attacks.
“I am confident that we will achieve this, establishing a lasting peace. We must ensure that Russia cannot invade Ukraine again, that Ukrainians return from captivity, and that Ukraine has a bright future. This is a rightful aspiration of every nation,” he stated.
