Yuzvendra Chahal will return to Northamptonshire this summer on a contract lasting from June until the end of the 2025 season, participating in the County Championship and One-Day Cup. Following a successful stint in 2023, where he took 19 Championship wickets, including two five-wicket hauls, Chahal expressed excitement about rejoining the team, praising the camaraderie in the dressing room. Although he hasn’t played for India since 2023, he remains a sought-after wrist spinner, becoming the most expensive spin bowler at the IPL auctions. Northamptonshire’s head coach Darren Lehmann welcomed Chahal’s return, highlighting his experience and love for the game.
The Indian leg spinner will participate in the county’s County Championship and One-Day Cup endeavors. This agreement mirrors the one that brought the 34-year-old to Wantage Road the previous summer.
While Chahal has not played for India since 2023—serving as an unused member of the victorious 2024 T20 World Cup squad—he continues to be a highly sought-after wrist spinner. In November, he became the most expensive spin bowler at the IPL auctions, being acquired for INR 18 crore (£1.6 million) by Punjab Kings ahead of the 2025 season, which will conclude on May 25.
“I had a wonderful experience last season, so I’m thrilled to be returning,” Chahal remarked. “There are fantastic individuals in that dressing room, and I’m eager to be a part of it once again.”
“We showcased some excellent cricket towards the end of the season, so I hope we can carry that momentum forward and achieve some victories.”
Darren Lehmann, Northamptonshire’s newly-appointed head coach, expressed his enthusiasm over Chahal’s re-signing: “I’m really looking forward to having one of the best leg spinners in the world return to Northamptonshire this season.”
“He brings immense experience and is a true gentleman who has a passion for the game. Having him with us from mid-June until the season’s end will be fantastic.”
