Xiaomi is set to double its electric vehicle lineup with the YU7, a new electric SUV featuring a unique purple-tinted roof. Like the SU7 sedan, the YU7 will utilize advanced sun protection technology, including a substantial glass area and specialized coatings. The SU7 features a panoramic roof that blocks 99.9% of UV rays and significantly reduces cabin temperature, outperforming the Tesla Model 3 under high heat conditions. The dual silver coating and Low-E technology provide superior insulation while maintaining aesthetics. Scheduled for launch in June or July 2025, the YU7’s roof promises both style and comfort.
Xiaomi is set to expand its electric vehicle lineup with the introduction of the YU7, a new electric SUV. Recently released images give us a sneak peek at the YU7’s roof, which showcases a captivating purple hue. While some specifications of the vehicle have already surfaced, we now learn that the YU7 will incorporate the same remarkable sun protection technology found in Xiaomi’s initial EV, the SU7 sedan.
The Xiaomi SU7 boasts an impressive 5.35 m2 of glass, resulting in a bright and spacious cabin. This generous glass coverage employs cutting-edge technology to shield passengers from the sun’s harmful rays and heat. The SU7’s panoramic roof features a dual-silver coating that blocks 99.9% of UV rays and 99.1% of infrared radiation. The windshield takes it a step further, outfitted with a triple-silver coating that prevents 99.5% of UV and 97.6% of infrared radiation.
Based on internal tests by Xiaomi, this innovative glass technology significantly impacts cabin temperature. After being subjected to 100°F for 1.5 hours, the interior of the SU7 reached 139.1°F. In comparison, Xiaomi asserts that the new Tesla Model 3 hit a considerably higher temperature of 160.7°F under identical conditions.
This smart glass roof designed by Xiaomi consists of a 2.0mm clear glass layer with a dual silver coating, a central film featuring a heat-insulating membrane, and another 2.0mm clear glass layer with a Low-E coating. The combination of dual silver coating and Low-E technology effectively reflects infrared radiation, while the heat-insulating film enhances thermal insulation. As a result, the Total Solar Transmittance (TTS) is only 12.3%, allowing minimal solar energy into the cabin.
Xiaomi has proactively addressed concerns from SU7 owners about the necessity of additional window tinting. The company assures customers that no extra film is needed, as the vehicle’s extensive glass treatment—including acoustic laminated side windows with UV-IR coating—already delivers exceptional sun protection while also contributing to a quieter cabin.
With the YU7 SUV set to launch in June or July 2025, its innovative glass roof is expected to be one of its standout features. This element merges visually appealing design with the practical advantage of excellent solar protection, ensuring a stylish and comfortable environment for both drivers and passengers.
