Paterson, 35, excelled in Tests, claiming five-wicket hauls against Sri Lanka and Pakistan in South Africa, and has signed with Middlesex for their first seven Championship fixtures, including four at Lord’s. After four successful seasons with Nottinghamshire, where he took 180 wickets, he was not retained but aims to lead Middlesex’s attack following Ethan Bamber’s departure. Paterson expressed excitement about joining a prestigious club and the challenge ahead. Middlesex, securing their third overseas signing this month, hopes his experience will strengthen their pace attack. Meanwhile, Durham signed Australian seamer Brendan Doggett for a short-term visa.
Paterson, 35, achieved five-wicket hauls in both Tests he participated in during South Africa’s home summer, against Sri Lanka in Gqeberha and against Pakistan in Centurion. He has signed a contract that includes Middlesex’s first seven Championship matches—featuring four at Lord’s, where South Africa will compete against Australia in the WTC final.
During his four seasons with Nottinghamshire, Paterson claimed 180 Championship wickets at an average of 23.25, with seven of those being five-wicket hauls. However, the club has chosen not to extend his contract. He will be joining Middlesex, aiming to lead their bowling attack following Ethan Bamber’s move to Warwickshire this winter.
“Joining Middlesex is a privilege,” said Paterson. “I am committed to doing my utmost to help Middlesex secure promotion back to Division One, where the club truly belongs. I am eager to play at Lord’s—such an esteemed ground—and I am genuinely looking forward to the challenges ahead.”
“While I’m certainly disappointed not to be returning to Trent Bridge after four incredible years, I will forever cherish my time there. It quickly became a second home for me, and I formed friendships in the dressing room that I believe will last a lifetime.”
Australia’s Cameron Green (Gloucestershire) and Beau Webster (Warwickshire) are also using the Championship as preparation for the final, with several other potential participants likely involved in either the IPL or PSL during the April-May timeframe.
Alan Coleman, Middlesex’s director of cricket, commented: “We are thrilled to secure this signing as Dane is a player who will significantly enhance our pace attack and can create a meaningful impact for us in the early part of the season.
“His track record over the four years at Nottinghamshire demonstrates that he possesses all the necessary qualities to thrive in English conditions, and he comes with a wealth of experience accumulated over many years on both domestic and international platforms.”
