In the India vs Bangladesh Champions Trophy 2025 match in Dubai, Mohammed Shami excelled, becoming India’s leading wicket-taker in ICC events and the fastest Indian bowler to reach 200 ODI wickets. Rohit Sharma marked a milestone by surpassing 11,000 ODI runs. Bangladesh’s Towhid Hridoy scored a resilient century despite his team’s poor start at 35 for five. However, India faced fielding lapses, including Rohit dropping a catch and KL Rahul missing a stumping chance, which frustrated Virat Kohli. Ultimately, India restricted Bangladesh to 228, with noteworthy contributions from Shami and Harshit Rana.

The clash between India and Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy 2025 held in Dubai on Thursday featured several outstanding performances. Mohammed Shami achieved the record of becoming the highest Indian wicket-taker in ICC events, Rohit Sharma surpassed the 11,000-run milestone in ODIs, while Bangladesh’s Towhid Hridoy scored an impressive century after a shaky start for his team. However, there were also some blunders. Rohit Sharma missed a catch that could have potentially given Axar Patel a hat-trick. Additionally, KL Rahul’s wicketkeeping came under scrutiny when he failed to gather the ball, resulting in a missed chance for dismissal. Following Rahul’s error, the camera captured a visibly frustrated Virat Kohli. “That was the third fielding lapse for India,” commented Harsha Bhogle during the broadcast.

A cramping Towhid Hridoy displayed remarkable determination by scoring his maiden ODI hundred, but thanks to a five-wicket haul from Mohammed Shami, India successfully restricted Bangladesh to a modest total of 228 in their Champions Trophy opener on Thursday. Hridoy (100 runs off 118 balls, with 6 fours and 2 sixes) and the resilient Jaker Ali (68 runs off 114 balls, with 4 fours) partnered for a crucial sixth-wicket stand, combining for 154 runs to recover Bangladesh from a precarious position of 35 for five after they chose to bat first.

Shami’s performance alleviated concerns over the absence of the injured pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah as he claimed five wickets for 53 runs, and in doing so, became the fastest Indian bowler to achieve 200 ODI wickets.

Hridoy’s innings exemplified how to build a score while maintaining an impressive run rate, reaching his century in just 114 balls.

Both he and Ali demonstrated remarkable composure under pressure.

However, the Bangladeshi batsmen capitalized on the generosity of Indian fielders, with Ali being dropped on his very first ball faced off left-arm spinner Axar Patel (2 for 43).

This mistake denied Axar a chance at a hat-trick after he dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim and Tanzid Hasan in consecutive deliveries.

Hridoy had a similar stroke of luck when Hardik Pandya dropped him at mid-off on a delivery bowled by Kuldeep Yadav while he was on 23 runs.

KL Rahul, despite being sharp behind the stumps, missed a stumping chance that allowed Hridoy a second chance. Additionally, the Indian fielders displayed sloppiness during the middle overs, enabling the Bangladeshi batsmen to accumulate singles and twos and relieve some pressure.

Nonetheless, these lapses should not detract from the disciplined bowling displayed by the Indian side, particularly Shami, who made effective use of the new ball on a pitch that was relatively slow yet smooth.

Having had a subpar outing against England in the recent T20I and ODI series at home, Shami stepped up on this significant platform, taking the wicket of opener Soumya Sarkar in his very first over.

He quickly doubled his tally, dismissing Mehdy Hasan Miraz, who was caught expertly by Shubman Gill in the slips.

The Bengal pacer later returned to end the determined partnership between Hridoy and Ali, taking the wicket of the latter.

Shami went on to take two more wickets, making him India’s all-time leading wicket-taker in ICC tournaments, surpassing former bowler Zaheer Khan’s record of 59.

Harshit Rana (3 for 31), who was favored over left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, provided excellent support to his senior teammate.
