The death toll linked to suspected Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) has reached 11 after the passing of two more patients in Pune hospitals, officials reported on Wednesday.
The deceased include a 27-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man.
The woman, diagnosed with GBS, passed away in a city hospital on Tuesday, while the man from Daund in Pune district died in the state-run Sassoon General Hospital due to suspected GBS on Monday.
The woman who died was a resident of the Nandedgaon area, which is the epicentre of the GBS outbreak. She experienced loose motions on January 15 but recovered without treatment.
“On January 22, she began to experience weakness in her lower limbs and was hospitalized for GBS treatment. She was transferred to another hospital on January 25, where she was placed on life support. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her condition on February 18,” officials stated.
The man was admitted to Sassoon General Hospital on January 10 for suspected GBS and died on Monday due to acute respiratory failure.
In other news, the total GBS case count remained stable at 211 as no new cases were reported on Wednesday, officials noted.
