Trump Vows Additional Sanctions on Russia Due to Ukraine Assaults

President Donald Trump has threatened to impose new sanctions and tariffs on Russia due to its ongoing attacks on Ukraine. He stated on his Truth Social platform that he is considering significant banking sanctions until a ceasefire and peace agreement are reached. This announcement follows Russia’s recent drone and missile strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Trump’s stance comes after his administration suspended military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine amid a dispute over President Zelensky’s gratitude towards the U.S. Critics allege Trump’s actions indicate he is siding with Russia, which invaded Ukraine in 2022.

Washington:

On Friday, President Donald Trump warned of potential new sanctions and tariffs against Russia due to its attacks on Ukraine, following the previous suspension of US aid to Kyiv aimed at promoting diplomatic efforts.

“Given that Russia is currently ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield, I am seriously contemplating extensive Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and a FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS ACHIEVED,” Trump indicated on his Truth Social platform.

“To both Russia and Ukraine, come to the negotiating table now, before it’s too late,” he added.

This warning from Trump follows significant drone and missile strikes launched by Russia on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on the same day.

Earlier, the Trump administration had halted US military aid and intelligence cooperation with Ukraine amid a disagreement with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

During a televised meeting at the White House on February 28, Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized Zelensky, accusing him of being ungrateful for the billions of dollars in US weaponry.

Trump has faced strong backlash from both allies and domestic rivals, who claim he has favored Russia, the country that invaded Ukraine in 2022.

The United States, along with Russia, voted against its European allies on UN resolutions aimed at ceasing the war without emphasizing Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

Last month, Trump had a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, marking an initial step towards restoring normal relations and reversing extensive sanctions imposed by former President Joe Biden in response to the Ukraine invasion.
