Musk stated, “I love the president,” while Trump called Musk “brilliant” and “caring.” Despite their friendly banter and shared jokes, the discussion revealed deeper concerns, such as Musk’s influence over government operations and potential conflicts of interest. Both men avoided addressing these issues substantively, focusing instead on their camaraderie and the pressure they feel from detractors wishing to separate them. Trump assured viewers about safeguarding social programs, while Musk criticized opposition, reinforcing their alliance amid scrutiny.
On Tuesday night, President Trump and Elon Musk engaged in an enthusiastic conversation on Fox News that lasted over 30 minutes, highlighting their relationship.
“I adore the president,” Mr. Musk stated right away. “I just want to make that clear.” And for the next half-hour, he certainly did. The president described Mr. Musk as “a wonderful person,” “a remarkable individual,” “a compassionate person,” and “a brilliant mind.” They shared laughter and frequently completed each other’s sentences.
However, the interview was intriguing for everything left unsaid.
Much more is happening beneath the surface of their conversation from Tuesday night. Together, these two figures are pushing the limits of legality and constitutional boundaries. Mr. Musk is exploring areas within the Defense and Agriculture Departments, as well as the national parks and the Federal Aviation Administration. What implications arise from the richest man in the world effectively becoming a subcontractor for the most powerful man in the world? None of these critical issues were addressed meaningfully.
The interview predominantly focused on their mutual admiration. This relationship is significant because the longer their partnership continues — and the longer one allows the other to influence Washington — the broader the repercussions will be for the country and the globe.
Fox News host Sean Hannity remarked that their adversaries in the media and Washington “desire a separation.”
“They want the two of you to start disliking each other,” Mr. Hannity added. “And they certainly attempt to do so.”
Indeed, they do try. Democrats tease Mr. Trump by calling him “President Musk.” Time magazine created a cover with an image of the tech titan at the Resolute Desk. The president expressed irritation over this, yet he remained determined not to be manipulated.
“It’s just so apparent,” he commented during the interview. “They are remarkably inept at it. I once believed they were skillful.” He noted that Mr. Musk had called him to say, “You know they’re trying to drive us apart.”
Clearly, a magazine cover won’t suffice to achieve that.
If the president feels any discomfort about needing to explain Mr. Musk’s business dealings, or regarding Mr. Musk being photographed in a meeting with the Indian prime minister during his visit to Washington last week, he didn’t display it.
It was engrossing to observe their interaction — the 78-year-old real estate mogul from Queens who still values Time magazine and the 53-year-old tech innovator from South Africa who is fixated on video games, artificial intelligence, and reaching Mars. They seemed more at ease with each other than ever.
“He possesses immense imagination and scientific creativity,” Mr. Trump stated with pride.
“You’re much more than just a technologist,” the president told Mr. Musk, acknowledging him as a “good human being.”
Both men share a certain shrewdness and a transactional approach. They played off one another to construct a positive narrative surrounding their governmental initiatives. The terms “competence” and “compassion” were frequently reiterated.
Yet, there were fleeting moments when Mr. Trump appeared to acknowledge, if only slightly, that Mr. Musk might be treading on dangerous ground. “Social Security won’t be affected,” the president guaranteed at one point, adding, “Medicare, Medicaid, none of those programs will be altered.”
Still, despite numerous inquiries, neither was able to adequately address Mr. Musk’s numerous conflicts of interest. “I’ve never asked the president for anything,” he claimed at one point, as if that resolved the issue.
Mr. Musk has no issue articulating the charged political language that Mr. Trump favors; he characterized the “beating of the bureaucracy as we strive to restore democracy and the public’s will.” Mr. Trump’s interest piqued as Mr. Musk criticized their opponents for obstructing their efforts, asserting: “What they’re doing is unconstitutional. They’re guilty of the crimes they accuse us of.”
“That’s always the initial move they make,” Mr. Trump interjected. He added that it was all “a massive con job” as Mr. Musk nodded in agreement.
“I feel like I’m witnessing an interview between two siblings here,” Mr. Hannity remarked at one point.
