The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, recognized as one of the largest religious assemblies globally, wrapped up on Wednesday after a 45-day period of festivities in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
This year, the Maha Kumbh achieved a remarkable milestone, with nearly 66 crore devotees participating in a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and the legendary Saraswati converge. Reports suggest that the Kumbh Mela attracted twice the number of pilgrims compared to the entire population of the United States, which stands at around 34 crore.
When is the next Kumbh Mela?
The forthcoming Kumbh Mela is scheduled for 2027 in Nashik, Maharashtra. This sacred event will occur at Trimbakeshwar, located roughly 38 km from Nashik. The city is graced by the banks of the Godavari River, which is the second-longest river in India, and it hosts the revered Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas.
According to reports, the Kumbh Mela in 2027 will take place from July 17 to August 17.
During the NASSCOM Technology and Leadership Forum 2025 in Mumbai, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed ambitious plans to incorporate advanced technology into the Nashik Kumbh Mela of 2027.
He mentioned that technology would play a crucial role in allowing individuals who cannot physically bathe in the sacred waters to experience it virtually.
Why is the next Kumbh Mela in just three years?
Kumbh Melas are celebrated in four cities: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain, with at least one being organized every three years.
The event held every four years is referred to as Kumbh Mela, while the one that takes place every six years is known as Ardh Kumbh Mela.
The event conducted every 12 years is termed Purna Kumbh Mela, and the recently concluded gathering was the Maha Kumbh Mela, which is said to occur after an interval of 144 years.
