Stephen Curry takes on assistant general manager position with Davidson basketball.

Stephen Curry has accepted a role as assistant general manager for basketball programs at Davidson College, making him the first active player in major U.S. sports to take on such a position. Curry, who played at Davidson from 2006 to 2009, will leverage his college and professional experience to guide the men’s and women’s teams alongside GM Austin Buntz. In addition, he, his wife Ayesha, and others are starting an eight-figure fund for the programs. Curry, a two-time MVP with four NBA championships, returned to Davidson in 2022 to complete his degree and was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Star player Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors has taken on a new position as assistant general manager for the basketball programs at his alma mater, Davidson College, according to university officials who spoke to ESPN.

Curry is making history as the first active player in major U.S. professional sports to take on a front-office role with an NCAA program.

In this new capacity, Curry, who spent three seasons at Davidson (2006-09), will offer mentorship to both the men’s and women’s teams, utilizing his extensive college and professional background.

He will collaborate with general manager Austin Buntz, who previously worked on the global sports marketing team at Under Armour. Curry began his partnership with Under Armour in 2013 and introduced his own Curry Brand as a standalone entity within the company in 2020, also securing a lifetime shoe deal in recent years.

Curry, along with his wife Ayesha and long-time Davidson benefactors Don, Matt, and Erica Berman, will establish an eight-figure fund to support both the men’s and women’s programs. Matt Berman, who played soccer for three seasons while studying at Davidson as part of the class of 2005, will also step in as another assistant GM.

“The experience at Davidson is outstanding,” Curry stated in a release from the school. “My journey from starting at Davidson in 2006 to where I am now shows that I had the chance to play basketball at the highest level, received an excellent education, and built an incredible network through Davidson’s alumni. I want talented, high-character student-athletes to have that same opportunity.”

While at Davidson as a sophomore, Curry set the NCAA record for the most 3-pointers in a single season, earned conference player of the year honors twice, and was selected as the No. 7 overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft by the Warriors after his junior year.

The future Hall of Famer has since won two Most Valuable Player awards and four championships with the Warriors, entering his 16th season with the franchise.

Curry returned to Davidson in 2022 to finish his undergraduate degree, graduating as part of the class of 2010, and was also inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame.

In a similar vein, retired NFL quarterback Andrew Luck took on a general manager role at his alma mater Stanford last year.
