The Indian sports ministry is implementing video-monitored selection trials with observers across various disciplines to enhance transparency and fairness, addressing persistent issues of bias and disputes in athlete selections. Previously, athletes in sports like shooting and wrestling have faced unfair treatment, leading to legal action. The ministry emphasizes that selections should be merit-based and that federations cannot operate independently from oversight. Additionally, recognized National Sports Federations (NSFs) will be provided office spaces in Delhi stadiums to improve coordination and support for athletes. This initiative aims to reduce turmoil in the selection processes and foster a more equitable environment for athletes.

To tackle the ongoing issue of selection controversies in Indian sports, the sports ministry plans to advocate for video-recorded trials with an observer present across various disciplines. The ministry aims to ensure that athletes do not feel wronged or marginalized during the selection process. “All selection trials will be conducted under video surveillance to guarantee transparency and fairness. You will see a reduction in unrest in sports owing to these measures,” a ministry official stated. The referenced unrest is the conflict that frequently affects selection procedures in the country. Athletes from prominent sports such as shooting and wrestling approached the courts before last year’s Olympics due to concerns about biases and unclear policies.
“From now on, selection trials will also include observers. Ministry and Sports Authority of India (SAI) officials will oversee the process, and this will be implemented across all sports,” said the source.
“Only performance should be the criterion. Decisions must be based on merit. Federations cannot act as they please under the guise of autonomy,” he added.
The national shooting federation was among those heavily criticized for lacking a consistent selection policy last year.
Wrestling turmoil being addressed
Indian wrestlers find themselves in a difficult situation due to the national federation’s lack of recognition from the ministry.
They have already had to withdraw from one ranking tournament, and their participation in upcoming events is uncertain because of the ongoing legal dispute with the Wrestling Federation of India.
The ministry is “doing its utmost” to ensure that this uncertain situation does not negatively impact the athletes.
Recognized NSFs to receive office space inside stadiums
Furthermore, the ministry will provide recognized National Sports Federations (NSFs) with office spaces within stadiums in Delhi “to improve coordination and athlete support.” Many national federations were previously located inside Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium before relocating due to renovation work for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
