Smith relieved fixture tangle worked in Australia’s favour – ‘We guessed right in the end’

Australia arrived in Dubai uncertain about their next destination for the Champions Trophy semi-final but took the opportunity to play golf and train at the ICC Academy. Captain Steven Smith noted the benefit of preparing in Dubai, as it allowed the team to acclimatize to conditions rather than traveling immediately to Lahore. The players appreciated the brief respite from the strict security measures in Pakistan, enabling them to relax and prepare adequately for their upcoming match. Overall, this arrangement allowed Australia to feel well-prepared and optimistic about their performance.

The crucial aspect is that golf has been enjoyed.

Australia arrived in Dubai uncertain about whether they would remain there or travel to Lahore for the second semi-final of the Champions Trophy. However, the players on the Australian team seized every opportunity to get in some rounds.

More importantly, the additional time has permitted Australia to train in Dubai – even if it’s at the nearby ICC Academy instead of the Dubai Stadium itself, which has been too occupied to facilitate center-wicket practice over the last two days.

“In the end, we made the right call,” said Australia captain Steven Smith. South Africa also arrived in Dubai but has since returned to Lahore. “It’s great to be here and have a few days of preparation. If we had waited for last night’s outcome, we would have had to fly here today and play tomorrow.”

“We wouldn’t have had the opportunity to train on the pitch or acclimatize to the conditions at the academy. If we had to go back, we would have been on the same flight as New Zealand and had to spend a day there before playing, so this arrangement was logical for us.”

Some of the teams’ concerns have revolved around the security protocols they needed to follow in Pakistan.

“We had a little reset and enjoyed a few days here, out of a pretty strict bubble in Pakistan due to security measures. It’s been nice to relax a bit. A few guys have hit the golf course and explored the area. We’re now well-prepared for tomorrow and excited for it.”
