South Australia 93 and 272 for 6 (Sangha 75, McInerney 61, Nielsen 49) lead Tasmania 101 by 264 runs

Half-centuries from Jason Sangha and Conor McInerney have put the Sheffield Shield leaders in a commanding position against Tasmania during their brisk encounter.

At the close of play on day two at Adelaide Oval, SA was 272 for 6 in their second innings, holding a 264-run advantage over Tasmania. The home side only managed 93 in their initial innings, while the visitors scored 101.

Following a day where 20 wickets fell, four South Australian batsmen took charge on Wednesday, as Sangha (75), McInerney (64), Harry Nielsen (49), and Liam Scott (43 retired hurt) all performed well.

Sangha and McInerney established a match-high partnership for the third wicket, putting together 100 runs after losing opener Henry Hunt and captain Nathan McSweeney early.

Tasmania’s Gabe Bell claimed the wickets of both Hunt, who was caught and bowled after edging a shot towards the leg side, and McSweeney, who was lbw for the second time in the match.

McInerney and Hunt advanced SA’s score to 138 before the former was bowled by an excellent delivery from Riley Meredith, who bowled from around the wicket, causing the ball to move away from the left-hander and clip the off stump.

New Test allrounder Beau Webster employed a similar strategy, bowling around the wicket with his medium pacers, and dismissed Jake Lehmann, caught at first slip by Jordan Silk.

Sangha fell to the bowling attack a dozen overs later, leaving SA at 181 for 5 with the match finely poised. However, allrounder Scott and wicketkeeper-batter Nielsen shifted momentum back to the home side with a lively 89-run partnership.

Nielsen hit eight boundaries in his 81-ball innings, while Scott struck six fours before retiring hurt due to a suspected migraine just before stumps. Nielsen was subsequently trapped lbw by Meredith in the following over, marking the quick’s second wicket.
