Secretary to Lok Sabha MP Defrauded of Over Rs 1 Lakh by Scam Helpline Call

A personal secretary to a Lok Sabha MP lost over ₹1 lakh to fraudsters after calling a fake helpline while booking a train ticket. The incident occurred on January 4 when the victim, trying to book a ticket from Chennai to Kumbakonam, had his payment deducted but did not receive confirmation. Searching online for assistance, he called a fraudulent number, leading to three unauthorized transactions from his bank account. Upon realizing the fraud, he filed an online complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, which was forwarded to the Cyber Police Station in New Delhi for investigation.

A personal secretary for a Lok Sabha MP fell victim to fraud, losing more than Rs 1 lakh after dialing a counterfeit helpline number to check on his train ticket, police reported on Tuesday. The incident took place on January 4, when the victim, who resides in Lutyen’s Delhi, succumbed to cyber fraud while attempting to book a train ticket for his daughter, resulting in a loss of Rs 1,28,202, according to officials.

The police stated that the victim was trying to book a train ticket from Chennai to Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, using a mobile application.

In his report, the victim indicated that payment was deducted, but he did not receive the ticket. Following the transaction, he searched online for a helpline number on his mobile and made an inquiry call, police added.

Subsequently, the fraudsters executed three unauthorized transactions from his bank accounts, authorities said.

Upon realizing he had been conned, he promptly filed an online complaint using the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP). This complaint was then referred to the Cyber Police Station in New Delhi for further investigation, according to reports.

On January 5, he formally submitted his complaint in writing, and an inquiry was initiated. Following a preliminary investigation, the Cyber Police Station lodged an FIR and launched an investigation, they informed.
