Schedule for Social Security Payments in April and Throughout 2025

Social Security recipients should prepare for significant changes regarding banking information updates. Affected by budget cuts under the Trump administration, Social Security faces job losses, office closures, and a focus on fraud prevention. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick suggested that skipping payments could help identify fraud, indicating older consumers typically trust the government. As April payments approach, recipients should be aware of the distribution schedule: checks will be sent on specific Wednesdays based on birthdates. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive payments on designated dates. Beneficiaries can find yearly schedules online for better financial planning.

The future of Social Security is a significant concern for millions of Americans reliant on monthly benefits.

As part of the Trump administration’s measures to reduce federal spending, Social Security is facing job cuts, office closures, a new customer service approach, and increased scrutiny for fraud. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick remarked that if Social Security “didn’t send out their checks this month, my 94-year-old mother-in-law wouldn’t complain,” suggesting a possible suspension of payments to catch fraudsters.

“The ones who complain are usually the thieves,” he stated during an appearance on the “All-In” podcast. “Really, your elderly parents trust the government.”

While it’s uncertain if all parents would agree, we are currently hopeful that Social Security payments for April will start disbursing to the approximately 69 million older and retired Americans, as well as individuals with qualifying disabilities.

Most Social Security payments are issued on Wednesdays each month. If your birthdate falls between the 1st and 10th, payment will be made on the second Wednesday; those born from the 11th to the 20th will receive it on the third Wednesday, and individuals born after the 20th will be paid on the fourth Wednesday, as per the Social Security Administration’s schedule.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients are expected to receive their April 2025 payment on Tuesday, April 1. The Social Security Administration recommends waiting three additional mailing days after the expected date before reaching out if payment is not received; most payments arrive on time since 99% of beneficiaries are paid electronically.

In May, SSI beneficiaries will receive two payments – one on May 1 for May 2025 and another on May 30 for June 2025. When the first of the month coincides with a federal holiday or weekend, SSI payments are distributed early – for instance, June 1 falls on a Sunday.

Approximately 7.4 million Americans with disabilities or limited resources receive monthly SSI benefits. About half of those receiving SSI also qualify for Social Security payments.

Social Security Payment Schedule for April

The Social Security Administration has published its annual payment schedules for 2025 and 2026, providing a calendar for planning purposes.

Standard Social Security retirement benefits will be issued on the following schedule:

  • Wednesday, April 9: Birth dates from the 1st to the 10th of the month.
  • Wednesday, April 16: Birth dates from the 11th to the 20th of the month.
  • Wednesday, April 23: Birth dates from the 21st to the 31st of the month.

What is SSI?

Supplemental Security Income offers monthly payments to individuals with limited income or resources who are aged 65 or older, blind, or have a qualifying disability. Children with qualifying disabilities may also receive SSI, according to the SSA’s website.

Generally, adults qualifying for SSI earn no more than $2,019 in monthly wages.

Individuals who may qualify for SSI can initiate the application process online, in person at a local Social Security office, or by calling 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time on weekdays.
