Salvy’s Sandlot Receives Unique Chance at Royals Opening Day

Last year, Royals catcher Salvador Perez surprised kids, including Cameron Lard, by playing Wiffle ball at Lard’s house, igniting excitement within the community. Following this, the group, dubbed “Salvy’s Sandlot,” had memorable experiences, such as attending a 2024 postseason game and presenting Perez with a Musial Award. On Opening Day 2025, they participated in pre-game ceremonies at Kauffman Stadium, announcing “Play ball!” The boys reflect on their bond through Wiffle ball and appreciate Perez’s kindness, expressing hope that he returns to play with them again, fostering lessons of kindness and fair play.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Last year, the internet erupted with excitement when Royals catcher Salvador Perez dropped by to play Wiffle ball with the kids at Cameron Lard’s home.

“I never imagined any of this would occur,” Lard expressed. “Since Salvy’s visit, we’ve been playing and hoping for his return.”

KSHB 41 has had the pleasure of meeting with “Salvy’s Sandlot” multiple times since August, including during Lard and his mom’s attendance at a 2024 Postseason game at The K and when the whole Wiffle ball crew presented Salvador Perez with a Musial Award.

“Salvy’s Sandlot” gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at Royals Opening Day

On Thursday, Opening Day 2025 at Kauffman Stadium, Cameron and the rest of “Salvy’s Sandlot” received an invitation to take part in pre-game ceremonies.

“It’s really nerve-wracking,” Lard added.

They were given the royal treatment, announcing “Play ball!” right after the National Anthem.

To reach their moment of fame, it was a case of hurry up and wait.

The boys sat in the Royals press conference room, greeted Royals Manager Matt Quatraro as he walked through the clubhouse, and fist-bumped a few players.

This unforgettable experience was made possible by Salvy’s generous act last autumn.

“It’s been pretty wild,” Hudson Hockett shared with KSHB 41. “Just playing with the little ones is awesome, and playing alongside Salvy means a great deal because we get to see him live once again all together.”

For the boys, it’s been a once-in-a-lifetime chance. Many believe it’s one of the most incredible experiences they’ve ever had.

“We’ve been playing Wiffle ball together for years,” Henry Golubski stated. “It’s fantastic to be here together at the Royals stadium.”

The boys mention that their Wiffle ball season is already underway. They’re excited to find out if Salvy will return to the yard for a game this year.

“There’s a lot of grass that’s grown in some spots,” Braxton Henderson added.

At “Salvy’s Sandlot,” one should be ready for the unexpected.

“Expect anything, man,” Dawson Hockett remarked. “A year ago, I would’ve never imagined this. As a die-hard Royals fan, I can’t say I’ve ever been this close to the players.”

The boys have gained valuable lessons since Salvy’s visit—welcoming new players, playing fair, and showing kindness.

“He [Salvy] was kind enough to stop by and spend some time with us,” Myles Roberson stated. “Now, we can take time from our day to give back to him. It’s just natural for us to be kind to others.”
