Captain Marvel was a blockbuster success in 2019, grossing $1.1 billion, benefiting from its release timing between Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. The sequel, The Marvels, which continued Carol Danvers’ journey and introduced Monica Rambeau and Ms. Marvel, performed poorly, earning only $206 million globally. The film ended with Monica stranded in an alternate reality. Reports suggest that Captain Marvel is studying Kamala’s bangle to potentially rescue Monica, risking incursion. Monarch and Kamala are expected to have significant roles in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday (May 2026) and Secret Wars (May 2027), with the potential inclusion of the Young Avengers.
Captain Marvel achieved a remarkable $1.1 billion at the box office upon its release in 2019, benefiting from its premiere between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
The Marvels expands Carol Danvers’ narrative, bringing her together with WandaVision‘s Monica Rambeau and Ms. Marvel‘s Kamala Khan. While the sequel wasn’t a total failure, something seemed to miss the mark with viewers, resulting in a mere $206 million globally, marking it as one of Marvel Studios’ more significant underperformers.
In the final scenes of The Marvels, Monica Rambeau found herself trapped in an alternate reality, where she met a Variant of her mother, now transformed into the mutant hero Photon, alongside the X-Men’s Beast.
Although Ms. Marvel’s bangles might no longer be tied to Kang the Conqueror, that teaser hinted at “The Marvels” playing a significant role in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Per The Cosmic Circus, “[Captain Marvel is] currently examining how Kamala’s bangle, known as the Kree Quantum Bands, operates, along with analyzing jump point systems to determine how she might recreate the events from The Marvels that could allow her to rescue Monica from her alternate reality. The challenge lies in the fact that if she succeeds, she could condemn her universe to a dire outcome.”
Regarding what to anticipate from Monica and Kamala, the report indicates, “From what I’ve gathered, both characters are expected to return, with Monica Rambeau’s role being somewhat more pivotal in this upcoming film, similar to what Vision had in Avengers: Infinity War.”
Captain Marvel’s decisions might lead to an incursion or could be the catalyst for the heroes of Earth-616 teaming up with the X-Men of Earth-10005 (which includes Deadpool and Wolverine, naturally).
As for Ms. Marvel, leaked concept art for the forthcoming Avengers films depicts her alongside other members of the Young Avengers/Champions: Hawkeye, Cassie Lang, Wiccan, and Speed. It remains uncertain when or if Marvel Studios will formally announce the cast for Avengers: Doomsday, but indications suggest that Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani are likely to be among those assembling next May.
“I have a great fondness for Iman. She’s amazing. I cherish that character,” Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum stated last December. “I can tell you that she holds a significant place in the MCU for me. Ms. Marvel is a very important series for us, and while I can’t divulge too many details to avoid spoilers, she is definitely a focus. I’m excited to see where she appears next.”
Avengers: Doomsday is slated for release in May 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars expected to follow in May 2027.
