Rohit Sharma: India Star Chosen for Champions Trophy Stands Out for His Unique Qualities

Chakravarthy was a last-minute addition to the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy, replacing opener Yashasvi Jaiswal after an impressive T20 season. Rohit Sharma praised Chakravarthy’s consistency in training, noting he has unique skills to be revealed in important moments. Meanwhile, both Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav have returned from injuries and are looking to regain their rhythm. Shami, previously India’s best bowler in the 2023 ODI World Cup, is expected to deliver despite limited recent play. Rohit emphasized the importance of both players returning to form, suggesting their contributions could significantly strengthen the team’s performance.

Chakravarthy was a last-minute addition to the India squad for the Champions Trophy, with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal making way for the enigmatic spinner. Chakravarthy earned his spot following an outstanding season in the T20 format. When questioned about the spinner’s selection, Rohit explained that Chakravarthy was chosen for a specific reason. “He doesn’t showcase many variations in the net. He delivers the ball consistently. Perhaps he doesn’t want to reveal everything he has (laughs). But that’s a good trait. He possesses a unique weapon that he prefers to display when it truly counts.

“I am completely on board if he chooses to do that. However, he brings something distinct, which is why he is part of our squad. Everything we have observed from him over the last 8-9 months has been quite impressive.”

‘If Shami, Kuldeep are in form, team looks very good’

Both Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav have had limited opportunities in international cricket due to injuries. They have returned to the squad but are still working on finding their rhythm. In Bumrah’s absence, expectations for Shami have risen, particularly after his stellar performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

“Both are in good bowling fitness. Shami has participated in only two ODIs and a couple of T20s as well. Our primary goal with Shami was to see him back in Indian colors more than anything else.

“Whether he takes wickets or not is irrelevant at this stage. Our main objective was to get him back playing for India, and he has succeeded in doing that.

“From what I have observed thus far, he appears to be in excellent shape. When discussing a bowler like Shami, who has consistently performed for us over the years, it’s all about regaining rhythm. Hopefully, we can find that rhythm early in this tournament to boost the team.” Regarding Kuldeep, the skipper added: “Kuldeep, similarly, faced an injury, undergoing a hernia operation just after the New Zealand series, which sidelined him for two and a half months.

“It was crucial for him to return to playing and rediscover his rhythm. The two matches he played might not reflect in the statistics, and with certain players, you needn’t scrutinize the numbers too closely.

“For these players, it’s mainly about getting back to playing. If both of these guys find their form, the team will look very strong.”
