Robbie Hummel selects Greg McDermott

Athletic director Scott Dolson may consider advice from Robbie Hummel, a respected analyst and former Purdue star, on the next Indiana basketball coach. Hummel endorsed Greg McDermott, head coach at Creighton, praising his modern offensive style and success with limited resources compared to Indiana. McDermott boasts a 345-169 record in 15 seasons and has led Creighton to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, including three Sweet 16s. His coaching experience extends to Northern Iowa and Iowa State. While McDermott’s ties to Creighton are strong, potential openings at other programs could influence his future decisions.

If athletic director Scott Dolson is seeking guidance on choosing the next Indiana basketball coach, can he turn to a legend from IU’s rival?

Highly respected college basketball analyst Robbie Hummel, who excelled at Purdue and enjoyed his experiences at Assembly Hall, travels across and even outside the Big Ten’s territory to cover games. He possesses valuable insights about winning basketball that captivates audiences, making him a credible source for advising Dolson on his choice for the Hoosiers’ new leader.

His choice was featured in the “statements of intent” section on IndyStar’s hot board following the announcement of Mike Woodson’s departure at the season’s conclusion.

“I like (Greg) McDermott, and I might be biased because I’ve watched a lot of Creighton, but I love their offensive style, it’s contemporary, and they take numerous 3-point shots,” Hummel expressed on the “Field of 68” podcast. “He’s achieved success with, although Creighton isn’t lacking in resources, fewer resources than Indiana possesses. He is an excellent coach, and his temperament is ideal for that role.”

Greg McDermott is currently in his 15th season at Creighton, boasting a record of 345-169 (.671), with an anticipated 10th NCAA Tournament appearance approaching. The Bluejays have reached three Sweet 16s and one Elite Eight in the last four years, winning the Big East regular-season title in 2019-20 and the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title in 2012-13, which came with consecutive MVC tournament championships prior to their ascension in 2013-14.

McDermott, who will turn 61 in November, participated in three NCAA tournaments, all at Northern Iowa, during his nine seasons before joining Creighton. He achieved a record of 90-63 (.588) at UNI from 2001 to 2006 before moving on to Iowa State, where he finished with a 59-68 (.465) record over four years. He then transitioned to Creighton.

His son, Doug McDermott, was a three-time consensus All-American from 2012-2014 and played for the Pacers from 2018 to 2021, returning for the 2023-24 season.

However, if Iowa were to have an opening, despite Michigan State coach Tom Izzo advocating for Fran McCaffery’s continuation, McDermott might find a better fit there. Born in Cascade, he played at Northern Iowa from 1984 to 1988 and spent a decade coaching within the state.

Nonetheless, Creighton may remain home for McDermott, whose family has made significant financial contributions, leading to a building being named in his honor. Additionally, he has transformed Creighton into a consistent Big East contender, likely achieving a ninth consecutive top-4 finish in conference play.
