New No. 3 Varun Nayanar managed only 10 before being dismissed. Baby and Jalaj Saxena formed a 71-run partnership, with Saxena scoring 30. Kerala 206 for 4 (Baby 69*, Saxena 30, Bishnoi 1-33, Jadeja 1-33) vs Gujarat

On a hard-fought day in Ahmedabad, Kerala progressed slowly, driven by captain Sachin Baby’s unbeaten 69. Their cautious approach likely stemmed from recent first-innings collapses, most notably in the quarter-final against Jammu & Kashmir, where they found themselves at 200 for 9 and required an 81-run last-wicket partnership to seize a crucial lead.
Kerala’s openers, Akshay Chandran and Rohan Kunnummal, established a solid 60-run stand in 20.4 overs before the team faltered, losing 3 wickets for just 26 runs in a quick span. Chandran was run out for 30, while Kunnummal fell lbw to a Ravi Bishnoi delivery that outsmarted him, also scoring 30.
In a strategic move, Kerala introduced Varun Nayanar as the new No. 3, replacing Shoun Roger. Nayanar managed to soak up pressure for nearly an hour, scoring 10 runs, but was dismissed caught behind off the bowling of Priyajitsing Jadeja, who had previously dismantled Saurashtra in their quarter-final match.
The post-lunch session focused more on survival than scoring runs, with Jalaj Saxena and Baby forming a 71-run partnership over 27.5 overs until Arzan Nagwaswalla made a breakthrough. Saxena, who fought hard for his 30 runs and often refrained from attacking even when deliveries were in his hitting zone, was ultimately bowled as Nagwaswalla got through his defenses.

By that time, Baby had reached his first half-century since the Ranji Trophy’s return for the second leg, further solidifying his stance alongside Mohammed Azharuddeen as they safely navigated the final hour without further loss.

Gujarat will not be overly dissatisfied with their performance on a day when the pitch provided minimal assistance to both pace and spin bowlers. Bishnoi stood out among the bowlers, taking 1 for 33 in his 15 overs, primarily due to his quick delivery and ability to induce indecisiveness in the batters’ footwork.

Other bowlers, especially the pace attack, were generally precise but lacked the necessary speed to pose a genuine threat to the batsmen.
