Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-day state visit to Mauritius on March 11 to attend the island nation’s national day celebrations as the chief guest. His visit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, includes participation by Indian defense forces and an Indian Navy ship. Modi will meet with the Mauritian president and engage in discussions with Ramgoolam. India maintains strong ties with Mauritius, where 70% of the population is of Indian descent. Trade between the two nations has significantly increased, with a total trade volume of USD 554 million in the 2022-23 fiscal year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a two-day state visit to Mauritius starting March 11 to honor the national day celebrations of the island nation as its chief guest.
An Indian defense forces contingent will also take part in the celebrations, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released on Friday.
PM Modi’s visit to Mauritius comes at the invitation of Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a state visit to Mauritius on March 11 and 12 to participate in the national day festivities,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during his weekly media briefing.
The national day festivities in Mauritius are scheduled for March 12.
An Indian Navy vessel will also be dispatched to Mauritius for the occasion.
In the capital city of Port Louis, Modi will meet with the President of Mauritius and engage in extensive discussions with Ramgoolam.
India maintains strong and enduring relations with the island nation located in the Western Indian Ocean.
A significant factor in the special relationship is that individuals of Indian descent make up nearly 70 percent of Mauritius’s population of 1.2 million. Since 2005, India has been one of Mauritius’s largest trading partners. For the financial year 2022-2023, Indian exports to Mauritius reached USD 462 million, while Mauritian exports to India stood at USD 91.50 million, bringing the total trade volume to USD 554 million.
Trade has surged by 132 percent over the past 17 years, increasing from USD 206 million in 2005-06 to USD 554 million in 2022-23, as per official statistics.
