Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the historical period drama ‘Chhaava,’ starring Vicky Kaushal, and discussed Maharashtra’s significance in the evolution of both Marathi and Hindi cinema.
During his address at the 98th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in New Delhi on Friday, PM Modi stressed how the film, inspired by the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, has garnered nationwide acclaim. He also referenced the historical novel Chhava by Shivaji Sawant, which has familiarized many readers with the courage of Sambhaji Maharaj.
“Ye Maharashtra aur Mumbai hi hai jisne Marathi filmon ke saath-saath, Hindi cinema ko ye unchai di hai. Aur in dino toh, Chhaava ki dhoom machi hui hai. (It is Maharashtra and Mumbai that have elevated Hindi cinema along with Marathi films. And currently, Chhaava is creating a buzz.),” PM Modi remarked.
“Sambhaji Maharaj ke shaurya se, iss roop mein parichay, Shivaji Sawant ke Marathi upanyas ne hi karaya hai.” (It is through Shivaji Sawant’s Marathi novel that we have been introduced to the valor of Sambhaji Maharaj in this form.),” he continued.
In the meantime, the film, helmed by Laxman Utekar, has been exhibiting robust performance at the box office since its debut on February 14. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh reported that Chhaava surpassed the Rs 200 crore mark on Thursday.
On Instagram, Adarsh announced, “200 NOT OUT: CHHAAVA IS SENSATIONAL… RECORD HOLD IN MAHARASHTRA… Chhaava makes a grand entry into the Rs 200 crore club, boosted by the #ChhatrapatiShivajiMaharajJayanti holiday on Wednesday [Day 6].”
The film earned over Rs 30 crore on Wednesday alone, closely approaching its Valentine’s Day opening figures.
Maharashtra has proven to be the primary market for Chhaava, with Rajasthan and West Bengal also experiencing increased attendance mid-week.
This period drama showcases the iconic tale of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, with Vicky Kaushal captivating audiences in his portrayal of the Maratha ruler. The film also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna in significant roles.
