Pakistan’s Disastrous Champions Trophy Exit Sparks Major Political Fallout Nationally

Pakistan’s early elimination from the 2025 Champions Trophy has sparked criticism toward the players and put PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi in a precarious position. With expectations high for the host nation after 29 years, fans were left disappointed as Pakistan exited within five days. Opposition Leader Omar Ayub publicly criticized Naqvi, calling for his removal due to repeated team failures. The team lost both group matches to New Zealand and India, and their final match against Bangladesh will be inconsequential as both are already out. This poor performance reflects a pattern, following disappointing runs in recent ICC events.

Pakistan’s premature departure from the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025 has sparked significant criticism directed towards the players and has placed PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi under intense scrutiny, as reported by Geo News. After a long absence of 29 years, Pakistan hosted an ICC tournament, only to be eliminated within just 5 days, leaving fans of the team profoundly disappointed.

Omar Ayub, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and a member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), voiced his discontent with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi and called for his resignation.

In the wake of the Green Brigade’s exit from the prestigious event, Omar Ayub addressed the media on Tuesday, holding Mohsin Naqvi accountable for the team’s subpar performance in the current competition and urging management to relieve him of his duties due to “repeated failures,” as per Geo News.

Pakistan’s unfortunate streak in ICC events continued as they lost two consecutive matches in the group stage against New Zealand and India.

The Men in Green were in need of assistance from Bangladesh to secure a win against New Zealand. However, on Monday, the determined Kiwis triumphed over the Tigers with a five-wicket victory in Rawalpindi, securing their spot in the semi-finals alongside India.

Pakistan’s final group-stage match in the Champions Trophy 2025 will be against Bangladesh at the National Stadium in Rawalpindi. This match will serve as a dead rubber since both teams have already been eliminated from the tournament.

This is not the first instance of the Mohammed Rizwan-led team delivering disappointing performances in major tournaments. They also struggled in the last two ICC events. During the previous year’s T20 World Cup held in the West Indies and the United States, the Pakistan Cricket Team was eliminated after two straight losses in the group stage against the United States and their traditional rivals, India.

In the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup in India, the Men in Green managed to win only four out of nine matches, finishing fifth in the tournament with just eight points, again failing to reach the knockout stages.
