Pakistan’s Champions Trophy title defense has suffered a major blow as opener Fakhar Zaman is ruled out due to an oblique injury sustained during the tournament’s second ball. Imam-ul-Haq has been announced as his replacement. Fakhar’s injury occurred while fielding, and despite attempting to bat at No. 4, he struggled with discomfort, scoring only 24 runs. His absence is particularly significant given his stellar performance in the 2017 final against India. Pakistan’s situation worsens after a 60-run defeat to New Zealand, with their next match against India scheduled for February 23 in Dubai.
Representing Pakistan on the biggest stage is an honour and dream of every cricketer in this country. I have been privileged enough to represent Pakistan multiple times with pride. Unfortunately I’m now out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025 but surely Allah is the best planner.… pic.twitter.com/MQKmOI4rQU

This meant he was unable to open the batting for Pakistan, and when he finally batted at No. 4, he clearly struggled. He was visited multiple times by the team doctor and physio, and required pain relief during his 41-ball innings. It was a challenging performance, with his mobility limited, and he seemed unlikely to contribute significantly to Pakistan’s chase of the 320 runs scored by New Zealand. He managed to score 24 before being dismissed.
The injury is particularly unfortunate for both Fakhar and Pakistan. He had just rejoined the squad after Saim Ayub, Pakistan’s premier opener in their three away series victories late last year, was injured under similar circumstances. Saim injured himself while pursuing a ball at the boundary during the second Test against South Africa in January, ultimately resulting in an ankle fracture. His recovery is expected to keep him sidelined until at least March.
Fakhar’s most significant contribution to Pakistan cricket occurred during this tournament. He was the standout batsman in the final of the previous Champions Trophy in 2017, scoring 114 runs against India, leading Pakistan to victory.
Imam, who is stepping into the team, does not possess the same aggressive style as Fakhar and has not participated in international cricket since 2023. Nonetheless, he boasts an impressive record as an opener, averaging 48.27 with nine ODI centuries from 72 matches.
