Bella James has been ruled out of New Zealand’s ODI series against Sri Lanka due to a grade-two quadricep strain, requiring 3-6 weeks of rehab. She has been replaced by Lauren Down, who is currently the third-highest run-scorer in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield. James suffered the injury during a game against Central Districts and is hopeful to return for the following T20I series, which runs from March 14-18. Head coach Ben Sawyer expressed disappointment but noted Down’s experience and strong performance as a promising replacement. The ODI series starts on March 4 in Nelson.
James incurred the injury during a match between Otago and Central Districts in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, which is part of the New Zealand Cricket Women’s One Day Competition. She made her ODI debut against Australia in Wellington last year and achieved 51 runs over two matches. Head coach Ben Sawyer expressed disappointment that James won’t be able to build on her “strong start” against Sri Lanka.
“We’re all saddened for Bella,” Sawyer remarked. “She had a promising beginning to her international career in December, so it’s unfortunate that she misses the chance to follow that up this series. However, we are optimistic about her return for the T20s.” The three-match T20I series is scheduled from March 14 to March 18.
“Lauren adds significant experience to the team,” Sawyer stated. “She has been a vital player for the [Auckland] Hearts this season, and we are excited for her to bring that form into this series.”
The three-match ODI series will kick off on March 4 in Nelson before proceeding to Napier for the remaining two matches.
