NZ vs SL – Sri Lanka leave out Inoka Ranaweera and Ama Kanchana for New Zealand tour

Sri Lanka has announced its squad for the New Zealand tour, omitting left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera and seam-bowling allrounder Ama Kanchana, along with batter Hasini Perera and 16-year-old spinner Shashini Gambini. The team introduces young players, including Manudi Nanayakkara and Rashmika Sewwandi. Captain Chamari Athapaththu will lead a familiar top order alongside Harshitha Samarawickrama and Vishmi Gunaratne. Sri Lanka will depart for New Zealand on February 22, playing two warm-up matches before a schedule of three ODIs starting March 4 and three T20Is concluding March 18. The squad features a mix of experience and fresh talent.

Sri Lanka has omitted left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera and seam-bowling allrounder Ama Kanchana from their squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand, which consists of three ODIs and three T20Is.

In addition to them, batter Hasini Perera and 16-year-old left-arm wristspinner Shashini Gambini are not included in the lineup for the 2024 T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka’s final international assignment.

The squad sees the introduction of several young players. Manudi Nanayakkara and Rashmika Sewwandi, who both represented Sri Lanka in the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, have been shortlisted. It is Nanayakkara’s first call-up, while Sewandi was selected for the home T20Is against West Indies last year but did not play.

Another uncapped player in the squad is 23-year-old Chethana Vimukthi, while Imesha Dulani and Kaushini Nuthyangana each have five caps, and Sachini Nisansala has played 19 matches.

Sri Lanka will retain a consistent top order featuring captain Chamari Athapaththu, Harshitha Samarawickrama, and Vishmi Gunaratne, who, despite being only 19, has already played 18 ODIs and 47 T20Is.

Athapaththu is currently participating in the WPL in India with UP Warriorz. The tournament is set to conclude on March 15.

Sri Lanka’s team will depart for New Zealand on February 22. They are scheduled to play two warm-up matches in Lincoln on February 27 and 28, before the ODI series begins in Napier on March 4. The remaining two ODIs will take place in Nelson on March 7 and 9. The teams will then proceed to Christchurch for the first two T20Is on March 14 and 16, and conclude the tour in Dunedin on March 18.
