Thiruvananthapuram:
A 15-year-old student from Kozhikode district in Kerala succumbed to serious head injuries following a confrontation with other students, reportedly involving a nunchuck, a weapon typically associated with martial arts. The unfortunate incident took place on Thursday in the vicinity of a private tuition centre in Thamarassery.
The student, named Muhammed Shahabas, was a Class 10 pupil at MJ Higher Secondary School and had been receiving medical treatment at Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital.
Kozhikode Rural Superintendent of Police (SP) KE Baiju stated that a murder case has been filed against five Class 10 students from the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School located in Thamarassery.
Authorities believe that the altercation was sparked by a disagreement during a farewell party held at the tuition centre. The argument escalated into a physical confrontation around 5 pm on February 23.
After the attack, Shahabas ran to a nearby mall. Rather than going home, he chose to get on a motorcycle with someone else and left the scene. During the ride, he vomited but did not seek immediate medical care. Instead, he went to a friend’s house to rest before eventually returning home.
His condition worsened later on, and he was initially taken to Thamarassery Taluk Hospital. The attending doctors there did not initially recognize the seriousness of his injuries. However, as his health declined, he was transferred to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, where he remained in a coma until he passed away.
Five students have been apprehended and will be presented before the Juvenile Justice Board. The General Education Minister V Sivankutty has instructed the Director of General Education to conduct a departmental investigation.
