As the NEET-UG 2025 registration deadline approaches, candidate sign-ups have dropped, recording nearly 23 lakh registrations, a decrease of 1 lakh from last year. Experts anticipate even fewer candidates will sit for the exam, with about 19 candidates per available MBBS seat, down from 20.30 last year. Many potential candidates have not completed their registration due to issues like incomplete documentation and unpaid fees, leading to an estimated 22 to 22.5 lakh who may actually appear for the exam. The initial surge in registrations has slowed, and changes in admission policies at local universities may impact student participation.
Kota: With the approaching deadline for NEET-UG 2025 registration, there has been a notable drop in the number of candidates enrolling. So far, nearly 23 lakh registrations have been logged, marking a decrease of one lakh compared to last year’s 24.06 lakh candidates.
Experts anticipate that the final number of participants in the exam will be even lower, which may further reduce the competitive landscape.
This year, there are a total of 1.20 lakh MBBS seats available, leading to around 19 candidates vying for each seat, as opposed to last year’s 20.30 candidates per seat.
Pankaj Khandelwal, who operates a form-filling center in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, reported that the final registration count was approximately 23.40 lakh late last night. However, many candidates have either not paid their online fees or have left their forms incomplete.
“Some individuals could not finish the registration process due to missing documents. Consequently, it is anticipated that only about 23 lakh registrations will be deemed complete,” he noted.
Moreover, it is expected that the number of candidates actually sitting for the exam could be 60 to 70 thousand fewer than those who registered, estimating around 22 lakh to 22.5 lakh candidates to participate.
Registrations Decreased
Private counselor Sonu Kumar stated that there were hopes for an increase in the registration numbers this year, but the opposite has occurred.
“The registration rate surged in the first five days of March, yielding four to five lakh new registrations. Currently, the total is about 23 lakh, but it’s likely that 60 to 70 thousand fewer candidates will appear for the exam,” he added.
This count also includes students who gained admission to undergraduate courses at Rajasthan University of Health Sciences in Jaipur and Marwar Medical University in Jodhpur via NEET.
“Nonetheless, due to the reversal of these institutions’ decisions, these students might find it challenging to take the exam,” Kumar explained.
