Mohammed Shami, India’s lead bowler, returned to international cricket aiming to secure regular wickets after overcoming significant injuries. In the Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh, he showcased his skills with 5-53, contributing to India’s six-wicket victory. The 34-year-old stepped in due to Jasprit Bumrah’s absence and expressed the challenge of recuperating from injuries sustained since the 2023 ODI World Cup final. Shami, surpassing Zaheer Khan as the leading bowler in ICC ODI tournaments, reflected on the difficulties of sidelined periods. He emphasized the importance of focusing on the present while preparing for future challenges, particularly the upcoming match against Pakistan.
On Thursday, India’s pace spearhead Mohammed Shami expressed that he entered the Champions Trophy aiming to consistently take wickets, marking his return to international cricket following a career-threatening injury. Shami delivered an impressive performance, claiming figures of 5-53, which contributed to India’s six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their opening match of the 50-over tournament held in Dubai. The 34-year-old excelled in the absence of fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the event due to a back injury. Shami himself made his return to competitive cricket late last year after battling a series of injuries, including ankle, heel, and knee issues, delaying his recovery since his last appearance in the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
Shami was a standout bowler for India during the home 50-over World Cup, taking 24 wickets in seven matches, although the team ultimately lost the final to Australia in Ahmedabad.
“It was challenging to face injuries and fall from the form I had during the World Cup,” Shami told reporters.
“Those 14 months were incredibly tough as I had to relearn everything, which did take a toll on me emotionally. However, I got some domestic matches and four international games (against England) to regain my confidence.”
Regarding his performances in ICC tournaments, Shami stated, “I always strive to take wickets, especially in ICC events, even if I concede a fair number of runs.”
Shami has consistently been crucial for India in major tournaments and has now surpassed former fast bowler Zaheer Khan as the leading wicket-taker in ICC ODI tournaments, amassing 60 wickets compared to Zaheer’s 59.
Shami’s presence was missed during India’s recent 3-1 Test defeat in Australia, where Bumrah often felt the lack of substantial support from the other end.
Shami mentioned that watching from the sidelines was equally tough for him.
“You always miss your bowling unit and those you’re normally partnered with,” said Shami.
“You constantly think, ‘I wish I could contribute as well.’ That feeling lingers when you’re injured, and all you can do is watch the games, ball by ball.”
However, life has come full circle for Shami in Dubai, a city where he faced harsh social media backlash after India’s loss to Pakistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup.
Shami was targeted for being a Muslim, and at that time, then-skipper Virat Kohli and many former players defended the veteran bowler.
“Social media can provoke unwanted thoughts these days,” Shami remarked when asked about the incident.
“I prefer not to dwell on such matters. People will remind you of poor performances, which can sting, but as a cricketer and sportsman, I believe one should not dwell on the past too much and instead focus on the present and future planning.”
India’s next clash is against arch-rivals Pakistan in a blockbuster match scheduled for Sunday.
