Delhi Capitals secured their second victory in the Women’s Premier League in Vadodara on Wednesday, thanks to skipper Meg Lanning’s impressive 69 off 49 balls. UP Warriorz, who were sent in to bat first, managed to set a target of 166 for seven, bolstered by opener Kiran Navgire’s rapid half-century. However, Delhi’s batting effort proved too strong, with Lanning being supported by Annabel Sutherland, who scored a vital 41 runs off 35 balls, along with contributions from Marizanne Kapp (19 not out off 17) and opener Shafali Verma (16 off 16). The chase was completed with a ball remaining.
DC got off to a quick start, with Shafali and Lanning putting together a solid opening partnership of 65 runs in just 41 balls.
Shafali was in fine form until she was caught by Chinelle Henry off the bowling of Deepti Sharma in the seventh over.
Jemimah Rodrigues followed suit, departing in the next over without scoring, as she attempted a paddle sweep against Sophie Eccestone but only succeeded in providing a top edge, which Rajeshwari Gayakwad caught effortlessly.
Sutherland and Kapp then combined for a crucial 48-run partnership for the fourth wicket to secure the win for DC.
With 32 runs needed from the final three overs, Kapp significantly reduced the target by hitting Ecclestone for two consecutive boundaries.
Needing 11 runs off the last over, Sutherland struck two fours off Tahila McGrath to bring her side home.
Earlier, UP Warriorz had a strong start with Navgire (51 off 27 balls) and Dinesh Vrinda (16 off 15) adding 66 runs in just 5.5 overs.
However, UP Warriorz lost five wickets for just 52 runs shortly after.
Sheweta Sehrawat (37 off 33) and Grace Harris (12) put together 36 runs for the fifth wicket before Harris offered a simple catch to Shafali Verma at mid-off off pacer Arundhati Reddy’s bowling.
In the final moments, Chinelle Henry (33 not out off 15) played a brief but impactful cameo, helping UP Warriorz wind up with a total beyond 160.
For DC, Annabel Sutherland shone with the ball, claiming figures of 2/26 from her four overs.
