Inter Miami CF head coach Javier Mascherano expressed optimism about Lionel Messi potentially joining the roster for the match against Charlotte FC, while emphasizing the importance of avoiding unnecessary risks at this stage of the season. After missing two games due to fatigue from a busy schedule, Messi has participated in most training sessions recently. Mascherano highlighted the team’s ability to secure victories without Messi, stating the significance of all players stepping up in his absence. Inter Miami remains undefeated this season, preparing for the match against Charlotte before traveling to Jamaica for the Concacaf Champions Cup.
Inter Miami CF head coach Javier Mascherano expressed his hope that Lionel Messi might be included in the squad for the Sunday night match against Charlotte FC at Chase Stadium. However, he emphasized that he would not take any unnecessary risks with the star player at this point in the season.
“Leo is feeling much better. We are hopeful that if everything goes smoothly, there is a possibility he will be part of the roster. We will see, but training is still required. Of course, I can’t guarantee anything while there are still training sessions to complete,” Mascherano stated on Saturday.
Messi has been absent for the last two matches of Inter Miami, watching from the sidelines as the team recorded a 4-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo on March 2 and a 2-0 win over Cavalier FC in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup round of 16 on March 6.
Mascherano opted to rest the Argentina captain after he showed signs of fatigue from playing three matches within seven days, prioritizing his health over potential injury risks.
Since then, Messi has engaged in a significant portion of training leading up to Sunday’s match. Media were present to observe the first 15 minutes of Saturday’s practice, where Messi warmed up with his teammates.
“I’m the first one who wants Leo to play because I know that having him on the field makes us stronger. I wouldn’t undermine our chances, that would be foolish,” Mascherano remarked. “Each day brings new challenges, and I need to ensure that every player, including Leo, feels 100%. If that’s not the case, I won’t take any unnecessary risks.”
Inter Miami remains unbeaten in the 2025 season, boasting four wins and one draw across all competitions. The team has managed two wins without Messi, a fact that Mascherano was eager to highlight.
“It’s crucial for all the players, coaching staff, and the club to recognize that when Leo is absent, we all need to step up because his absence is significant,” he noted.
“That said, if I had a choice, I would want him in every match because we’re undeniably stronger with him on the pitch.”
Inter Miami will take on Charlotte at Chase Stadium before heading to Jamaica to conclude the two-legged round-of-16 series against Cavalier on March 13.
