On Wednesday, two successive earthquakes, one registering a magnitude of 5.7, shook Manipur, with tremors felt throughout the Northeast, according to officials.
The 5.7 magnitude earthquake occurred at 11.06 am, with its epicentre located 44 km east of Yairipok in the Imphal East district, at a depth of 110 km, as reported by officials from the Regional Seismological Centre in Shillong.
Tremors were also experienced in Assam, Meghalaya, and other parts of the region, they noted.
A subsequent earthquake, measuring 4.1 in magnitude, struck Manipur at 12.20 pm, impacting the Kamjong district at a depth of 66 km, they further added.
Following the quakes, cracks were observed in several buildings across Manipur. Footage shared on social media depicted cracks in a school building in Wangjing Lamding within Thoubal district, where a relief camp was established for those affected by ethnic strife.
“We are validating the damage reports,” an official in Imphal stated.
So far, no damage has been reported from other states in the region.
