Mahindra Surpasses Hyundai to Claim Title of India’s Second-Biggest Automaker

The Indian automobile industry is experiencing a shift in dynamics, particularly in car brand rankings. In February 2025, Mahindra & Mahindra surpassed Hyundai Motor India, becoming the second-largest automaker, driven by a 19% year-on-year growth with 50,420 domestic sales. Hyundai recorded a total of 58,727 vehicles sold, marking a 2.93% drop compared to the previous year, with domestic sales down 4.93%. Factors impacting Hyundai’s performance include geopolitical challenges and recent declines in month-on-month sales. Mahindra’s success is linked to its strong SUV portfolio, with overall sales growth reflecting positive market momentum.


The Indian automobile sector is experiencing notable shifts in its dynamics. A significant transformation is evident in the changes in the rankings of car brands within the nation. Particularly, Mahindra & Mahindra has surpassed Hyundai Motor India, securing the position of the second-largest automaker in February 2025. This achievement is attributed to an impressive year-on-year growth of 19 percent in February 2025, translating to sales of 50,420 units in the domestic market.

In the same month, Hyundai India reported a 6.8 percent rise in exports compared to the previous year, achieving sales of 11,000 units. Meanwhile, Mahindra & Mahindra exported 1,966 units. In total, Hyundai India recorded sales of 58,727 passenger vehicles last month, while Mahindra’s sales reached 52,386.

Mahindra February 2025 Sales

In the Utility Vehicles segment, Mahindra saw 50,420 vehicles sold in the domestic market, marking a 19% growth, with an overall sales total of 52,386 vehicles, including exports. The domestic sales for Commercial Vehicles amounted to 23,826.

As per Veejay Nakra, President, Automotive Division, M&M Ltd., “In February, we recorded SUV sales of 50,420, reflecting a growth of 19%, and a total of 83,702 vehicles sold, a growth of 15%. This robust performance is a testament to the sustained positive momentum of our SUV portfolio.”

Hyundai February 2025 Sales

Hyundai Motor India has unveiled its sales figures for February 2025, revealing cumulative volumes (domestic and exports combined) of 58,727 units. The company experienced a decline of 2.93 percent year-on-year, down from 60,501 units sold in February 2024. Domestic sales for the month totaled 47,727 units, which represents a 4.93 percent decrease compared to 50,201 units sold during the same period last year.

Hyundai attributes these lower volumes to geopolitical challenges. Nevertheless, the automaker is optimistic that the recent tax reforms will contribute to a sales boost in the upcoming months. Additionally, Hyundai’s cumulative volumes reflected a 10.48 percent month-on-month decline, falling from 65,603 units sold in January 2025. Sales have sharply decreased over the past three months, considering that the automaker sold 67,615 units in December 2024.
