Learn about the functionality of the Essential Key, the dedicated physical button on the Nothing Phone (3a) series.

The Nothing Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro will be unveiled on March 4 and will feature a new Essential Key, specifically designed for camera functions. This button allows users to take photos, capture screenshots, and record voice notes with various pressing actions. Additionally, it will access a custom AI within an app called Essential Space, intended to store digital content like screenshots, voice notes, and photos. While the Essential Key serves immediate functions, the Essential Space app is still in development and is expected to receive a more complete version with the launch of the Nothing Phone (3).

On March 4, the Nothing Phone (3a) and Nothing Phone (3a) Pro will be officially unveiled, both equipped with a dedicated camera button. Previously, Nothing hinted at the possibility of adding a red dot to this button, and we now have details on its functionality.

According to sources, this button will be named the Essential Key, as its primary purpose is to activate Nothing’s custom AI, integrated into an app dubbed Essential Space. This app will serve as an “AI-powered hub” for storing digital content such as screenshots, voice memos, and photos.

You can long-press the Essential Key to capture screenshots, use a long-press to record a voice note, and double-tap to quickly access content stored in Essential Space. Additionally, within the native Camera app, a single press of the Essential Key will allow you to take a photo.

Sources indicate that while Essential Space is still under development, it will make its debut on the Nothing Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro. A more comprehensive version is expected to launch with the Nothing Phone (3) in the future.
