Leakster: Honor is creating a proprietary 1-inch sensor for the Magic8 RSR Porsche Design.

Honor’s upcoming flagship Magic8 series will feature models ranging from 6.3” to 6.8”, with the top model being the Magic8 RSR Porsche Design. Notably, it will include a custom-designed 1” sensor with a variable aperture lens for improved low-light performance and versatility. Although the motivation behind developing the sensor in-house is unclear, it may indicate a desire for unique capabilities not met by existing manufacturers like Sony or Samsung. The custom sensor will be exclusive to the RSR model initially, but could potentially appear in future Honor flagship smartphones if successful.

According to leakster Smart Pikachu on Weibo, Honor’s forthcoming flagship Magic8 series will feature models ranging from 6.3” to 6.8” in size (Honor is expected to venture into mini phones soon). Notably, the premium Honor Magic8 RSR Porsche Design is said to incorporate a 1” sensor developed internally, as per the leak.

The RSR model will utilize this sensor behind a variable aperture lens. This lens can open wide to capture more light in low-light settings while also being able to close down for brighter day shots.

Regarding the sensor itself, it remains unclear what drove Honor to create one in-house—what capabilities do they seek that Sony, Samsung, or OmniVision cannot provide?

There were previously speculations that Huawei would create its own sensor for the Pura 70 models, but the Ultra model ended up featuring a Sony sensor (IMX989, 1”, 50MP), while the Pro and Pro+ models incorporated OmniVision sensors (OV50H, 1/1.3” 50MP). It will be interesting to see if Honor fares better than its former parent company.

Nonetheless, the exclusive 1” sensor will only be found in the high-end Magic8 RSR, but if it performs well (and the company manages to reduce production costs), it could also make its way into future Honor flagship devices.

In the meantime, you can read our comparison article that pits the Honor Magic7 RSR against the Magic7 Pro. Both share very similar camera hardware, although the RSR boasts enhanced components. Be sure to check out the article to see how significant the improvements are.
