Bhubaneswar:

The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) announced a scholarship on Wednesday in honor of Prakriti Lamsal, a 20-year-old Nepalese student at the private engineering institute who tragically died by suicide in her hostel room on February 16, which sparked unrest on campus.

This announcement was made by Achyuta Samanta, founder of KIIT and KISS, who met with Prakriti’s father and uncle to express his heartfelt condolences, as stated in a communication from the institute.

“A scholarship will be established in Lamsal’s name as a tribute to her memory,” Samanta remarked.

On the same day, senior officials from Nepal’s embassy in New Delhi visited the campus to meet with their fellow countrymen, reassuring them that such incidents would not recur. This visit coincided with the return of several students who had previously left campus.

“KIIT has implemented proactive measures to assist those who are still away in returning,” the statement continued.

Samanta also conveyed his commitment to ensuring the safe return of all students during discussions with Nepal’s Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba and Minister for Water Supply, Pradeep Yadav.

He further updated Lalbabu Raut, the former chief minister of Province 2 in Nepal, about the incident, assuring him that the institution is making necessary arrangements for the safe return of students from the Himalayan nation.

Earlier, officials reported that the deceased student’s body was sent to Nepal after completing the required legal formalities.
