Chennai:

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan spoke to party workers in Chennai on Friday, marking the 8th anniversary of his party, Makkal Needhi Maiyam (MNM), where he highlighted the significance of linguistic pride.

To commemorate this milestone, Haasan raised the party flag at the MNM headquarters in Chennai.

During his speech, Haasan emphasized the difficulties faced by Tamilians, particularly regarding their struggle to maintain their language. He mentioned Tamil Nadu’s historical resistance to the imposition of Hindi, cautioning those who might dismiss language concerns.

“Tamilians have given their lives for their language. Do not trivialize this. Tamilians, including children, understand the language they desire and have the wisdom to choose which language suits them,” Haasan remarked, alluding to the deep-seated quest for linguistic independence.

He also addressed criticisms of his political journey, with some labeling him a “failed politician.” Nonetheless, Haasan considered his experiences, acknowledging that he might have entered politics sooner.

“I believe my setbacks stemmed from entering politics later than I should have. Had I come into this realm 20 years earlier, my message and position could have been different,” he reflected.

In his message to party members, Haasan signaled MNM’s future political goals, stating that this year the party would have its presence felt in Parliament, and the following year in the state Assembly. He encouraged his supporters to begin preparations for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, highlighting the necessity of their active involvement.

“Today, we celebrate 8 years, much like a child maturing. This year, our voice will resonate in Parliament, and next year, your voices will echo in the Assembly,” he stated.
