Jim Harbaugh Facing Allegations of Dishonesty as Former Michigan Head Coach Responds to Matt Weiss Controversy Following Lawsuit from 11 Female Athletes

Jim Harbaugh led the Michigan Wolverines for nine years, achieving three playoff appearances and a national title in 2023. However, his tenure was marred by scandals, including sign-stealing allegations and the “Burgergate” incident, which raised doubts about the program’s integrity. Most notably, former offensive coordinator Matthew Weiss faces serious accusations of hacking and identity theft involving over 3,000 college athletes. Weiss has been charged with multiple counts, leading to lawsuits from 11 female athletes seeking over $50 million in damages. As Harbaugh moves on to coach the Chargers with an $80 million contract, the fallout from these controversies continues to impact Michigan football.

Jim Harbaugh joined the Michigan Wolverines after a four-year tenure with the San Francisco 49ers. He spent 9 years in Michigan, leading the team to three playoff appearances and finally securing the national championship in 2023, ending a decades-long wait. While the trophy cabinet may shine brightly for Jim Harbaugh and Michigan football may have attained new success during his era, there are underlying truths that are less glamorous.

Harbaugh’s 9 years at Michigan were marred by several controversies that left more marks than a stained jersey. Scandals such as sign-stealing, Burgergate, and spying accusations disrupted Michigan’s program, prompting doubts about the legitimacy of their playoff entries and the national championship win. In many ways, this era was characterized more by chaos than by triumph, with the lingering effects still impacting Sherrone Moore long after Harbaugh’s exit.

In a recent interview, Jim Harbaugh confronted the spying allegations and the indictment of his former assistant and offensive coordinator, Matthew Weiss. He paused for a moment before stating, “It was after the TCU game that we — that I found out, we found out, that there were allegations, and you said it, I mean indictment, that’s not a word that — sympathy for the victims and for Matt’s family. It’s shocking. Just really shocking, surprising. Didn’t see that one coming. Found out about it the same time everybody else did. Don’t know what to make of it. Just feel really bad for the people involved, that were affected by it. Especially his family and then the people that were victims of that.”

For context, Matthew Weiss faced accusations of spying and infiltrating databases belonging to over 100 colleges. Authorities allege that he accessed personal data, images, and confidential details of more than 3,000 college athletes, primarily women. He now faces charges that include 14 counts of unauthorized access to private computers and 10 counts of alleged identity theft, actions said to have occurred while he served as Michigan’s OC and QBs coach from 2021 to 2023.

The host of the ‘Monty Show’ aggressively criticized Jim Harbaugh for his indifferent and dismissive remarks. He further condemned the former Michigan head coach for evading responsibility. “I also think when you look at Jim Harbaugh and you look at just everything that has gone on in that program while he was the head coach, for him to talk about Matt Weiss and be like, oh, I had no idea, this right here is the very living definition of a sc—–g.”

The host also pointed out the irony in Jim Harbaugh expressing sympathy for the victims, stating, “The victims that you created, Jim Harbaugh. What Jim Harbaugh is trying to do here, as most sc—–gs do, they’re trying to completely push off any responsibility.”

Whether it’s the Burger Gate allegations, the sign-stealing scandal, or the controversy surrounding Matthew Weiss, Jim Harbaugh remains at the center of the storm. The NCAA is determined to penalize the former Wolverines head coach, accusing him of multiple instances of lying, which constitutes a level 1 infraction. Yet, Harbaugh has moved on, becoming the new head coach of the Chargers with an impressive $80 million contract. For now, Sherrone Moore remains caught in the turmoil in Michigan.

Another Major Lawsuit Filed Against Matt Weiss and Michigan

On the flip side, Mathew Weiss has been terminated from Michigan and has been indicted on federal charges. A lawsuit initiated by 11 female college athletes identified as Jane Does seeks over $50 million in damages from both Michigan and Matt Weiss. The lawsuit, submitted in the Eastern District of Michigan, includes claims from seven soccer players, one cheerleader, and one gymnast. The indictment outlines the serious nature of the charges against Weiss.

His goal was to obtain private photographs and videos never intended to be shared beyond intimate partners” and “kept notes on individuals whose photographs and videos that he viewed, including notes commenting on their bodies and sexual preferences.” Additionally, the attorneys for the plaintiffs stated that this case exemplifies “yet another disturbing failure by the University of Michigan to protect its students.”

In total, five federal lawsuits have been launched against both the Michigan program and Matt Weiss. If found guilty, Weiss could face up to five years in prison for each count, with charges totaling more than 24 counts of alleged computer and identity theft offenses. The lawsuits also implicate a third-party vendor, Keffer Development Services, which allegedly provided the databases Weiss used to download and inappropriate access personal information of the athletes. The future of these cases remains uncertain.
