IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians Update – Jasprit Bumrah Likely to Sit Out Opening Matches

Jasprit Bumrah will miss the initial matches of IPL 2025 while recovering from a stress-related lower back injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test on January 4. He is expected to rejoin the Mumbai Indians by early April, pending medical clearance. Prior to this, Bumrah was ruled out of the Champions Trophy due to ongoing discomfort and has faced back issues since his surgery in March 2023. MI’s first two IPL matches are on March 23 against CSK and on March 29 against GT. Concerns about his workload and future injuries persist, especially with an upcoming Test series in England.

Jasprit Bumrah is anticipated to miss the initial matches of IPL 2025 for Mumbai Indians (MI) as he continues his recovery from a back injury that has sidelined him since January. Reports suggest that Bumrah is likely to rejoin the squad by early April—MI has three matches planned for March—pending approval from the medical team at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Bumrah has been healing from a stress-related injury in his lower back, which he sustained on the second day of the concluding Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney on January 4. Following this, he was ruled out of the Champions Trophy, which India clinched earlier this month. This marks the first occurrence of a back injury for Bumrah since he underwent surgery in March 2023.
During the announcement of the Champions Trophy squad in January, Ajit Agarkar, India’s chief selector, stated that the BCCI medical team had advised Bumrah to rest for a minimum of five weeks (from the SCG Test). As the Champions Trophy commenced on February 19, Bumrah was included in India’s provisional squad. He traveled to Bengaluru for additional scans in early February, but continued to experience discomfort and was ultimately not named in the final squad.

It remains unclear how many matches Bumrah will miss and if there is a specific date for his return.

MI’s opening two IPL 2025 matches are away: they kick off their campaign in Chennai against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 23, followed by a match against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on March 29. MI’s first home game is two days later, hosting Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 31. They will also face two matches in the first week of April: against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Lucknow on April 4 and at home against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 7.

Bumrah’s distinctive bowling action has made him prone to back problems, leading the BCCI medical team, selectors, and the team’s management to carefully manage his workload and ensure he receives adequate rest between series and tournaments.

Recently, Shane Bond, a former New Zealand fast bowler who has previously worked with Bumrah at MI as the bowling coach, cautioned that another back injury in the same area as his previous surgery could potentially be a “career ender”.

Bond, who dealt with chronic back issues during his playing days, noted that the “danger” zone for fast bowlers arises when they shift too quickly from T20 to Test cricket, which is a significant concern for Bumrah, especially with India’s upcoming tour to England in June for a five-Test series, scheduled just a month after the IPL concludes on May 25.
