IPL 2025: MI Skipper Suryakumar Yadav Optimistic About His T20 Run Scoring

Mumbai Indians (MI) are facing personnel challenges as they enter IPL 2025, placing captain Suryakumar Yadav in the spotlight. This will be only his second match leading MI, opposing a strong Chennai Super Kings team known for spin bowling. Suryakumar humorously asserted he plans to counter them with “only sixes.” Despite missing key players like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah, he remains focused on his batting form and the upcoming T20 World Cup. He emphasized his commitment to scouting talent and preparing his team, stating they have a blend of experience and exciting new players ready for the challenge ahead.

Mumbai Indians (MI) are kicking off IPL 2025 with some personnel challenges, which has put Suryakumar Yadav in an even more prominent position. Although he currently captains India in T20Is, Sunday will mark only the second occasion he leads his IPL team. Opposing him will be a Chennai Super Kings side rich in spin bowling talent. What strategy does he have to tackle them?
“Just sixes,” he humorously remarked at the start of a relaxed press conference. It concluded with Suryakumar laughing heartily as he mused over the notion of MS Dhoni being treated as an uncapped player, thanks to the revival of an old IPL rule.

“All jokes aside,” Suryakumar continued. “They have a wealth of experience in their squad. The skilled bowlers they have fielded for this franchise over the years have proven their mettle. However, no matter what you face in this format, you have to stay true to yourself. Just enjoy it and focus on one ball at a time.”

Suryakumar’s upbeat demeanor wasn’t affected by the absence of players like Hardik Pandya (suspension) and Jasprit Bumrah (injury), nor by his recent batting performance.
“Are you asking about IPL or Team India? For IPL, I’ve been in good form,” he replied, recalling last season where he amassed 345 runs in 11 innings, including a century and three fifties.

“I believe that the harder you toil, the luckier you become. When it’s meant to happen, it will happen at the right time. I’m fundamentally process-oriented; I enjoy putting in hard work during practice. If runs are destined to come, they will come quickly—someday or another.

“When I practice well and strike the ball beautifully in the nets, I approach the game with a clear mind, fully aware of my objectives. That’s my sweet spot; knowing I’m in a good space and that I will deliver runs for my team.”

His batting and team dynamics are not his only thoughts anymore, given his role as India’s captain, especially with the T20 World Cup on the horizon. He mentions that he has always been attentive to emerging talents.

“My eyes have always been open, even when I wasn’t captain. Even when Rohit [Sharma] bhai was in charge, I was alert. Ultimately, when a player performs exceptionally in the IPL and earns a chance to play for India, every individual counts. You must always keep an eye out for players who can make a real impact for India, and that hasn’t changed over the years. There’s just a bit more responsibility now—nothing more.”

MI will have to rely on their bench strength to finalize their XI at Chepauk, where a “good wicket” awaits. They may opt for Satyanarayana Raju, a 25-year-old fast bowler from Andhra, who took seven wickets in seven matches at an economy of 8.23 during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He was one of the first bowlers to hit the nets ahead of the game on Saturday.

“If you look at the Mumbai Indians setup over the last decade or so, the scouting team has excelled. We’ve picked some amazing players. By analyzing all the domestic matches and collaborating with the coaches, our selections have been outstanding. We have a lot of exciting talent in our dressing room this time—great characters, some comical as well. It was good to see them during the camp and the practice matches. I believe they’re ready for the big stage.”
