Investing in Innovations Shaping the Future of the Internet

Firefox, the only major browser independent from billionaire backing, is prioritizing its impact on the future of the internet. To better align with evolving user needs, it will phase out two products: Pocket, a read-it-later app, shuts down on July 8, 2025, while Fakespot, an extension analyzing product reviews, will cease operations on July 1, 2025. Users can export their data from Pocket until October 8, 2025. This strategic shift allows Firefox to focus on enhancing its core browsing features and introduce new tools that provide users with more control and personalization online.

Firefox stands out as the only major browser not sponsored by a billionaire, and our independence influences every aspect of our development. This autonomy empowers us to focus on creating products and tools that positively shape the future of the internet. It also necessitates careful consideration of where we allocate our time and resources to ensure we make the greatest impact.

As users’ daily needs evolve with the web, it’s essential that we dedicate ourselves to Firefox and develop new solutions that provide you with genuine choice, control, and peace of mind while online.

Keeping this in mind, we’ve made the tough choice to discontinue two products: Pocket, our read-it-later and content discovery application, and Fakespot, our browser extension designed to evaluate the authenticity of online product reviews.

Here’s what’s happening

  • Pocket will be shut down on July 8, 2025
    • From May 22, 2025, you won’t be able to download Pocket or buy a new Pocket Premium subscription.
    • Premium monthly and annual subscriptions will be automatically cancelled. Annual subscribers will receive refunds automatically starting July 8, 2025.
    • Users can export their saved content anytime until October 8, 2025, after which their data will be permanently deleted.
    • API users must export their data before October 8, 2025, as transactions over Pocket’s API will cease after that date.
    • For further information, including refund procedures for Premium annual subscribers and guidelines on how to export saves, please refer to our Pocket support article.
  • Fakespot will be shut down on July 1, 2025
    • From July 1, 2025, you will no longer have access to the Fakespot extensions, mobile applications, or website.
    • The Fakespot feature in Firefox, known as Review Checker, will be discontinued on June 10, 2025.

Focusing on what empowers better browsing

We acquired Fakespot in 2023 to assist users in navigating unreliable product reviews utilizing AI and privacy-focused technology. Although the concept was appealing, it did not fit into a sustainable model.

Pocket has enabled millions to save articles and discover valuable stories. However, the way in which people save and consume content online has changed, prompting us to direct our resources toward projects that are more aligned with current browsing behaviors. Additionally, content discovery continues to evolve; Pocket has contributed to the curated content recommendations now visible in Firefox, and that experience will further improve. Meanwhile, new functionalities such as Tab Groups and enhanced bookmarks now offer integrated methods for managing reading lists effortlessly.

Thank you for helping shape what comes next

We appreciate the communities that have made Pocket and Fakespot valuable. As we discontinue these services, we’re excited to focus on developing new Firefox features that meet users’ most significant needs.

This transition enables us to influence the next phase of the internet—with innovations like vertical tabs, smart search, and more AI-driven features on the horizon. We remain committed to building a browser that serves you better: more personalized, more powerful, and proudly independent.
