New Delhi:
The Delhi Education Department is set to conduct the first draw of lots for admissions under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category in schools for the academic year 2025-26 today, March 5, 2025. Delhi’s Education Minister, Ashish Sood, announced that the draw will be transparent and will take place in the presence of parents and media representatives.
The draw is scheduled for around 2:30 pm in the Conference Room of the Education Department at the Old Secretariat. Out of the 2.5 lakh applications received for EWS admissions, the draw will determine the admissions for 38,000 students.
According to the news agency PTI, the Education Minister stated, “The draw of lots for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) will occur at the Old Secretariat on Wednesday at 2:30 pm in the presence of parents.”
“In light of the venue’s limited capacity, several television screens will be set up to enhance visibility for attending parents,” he added. The education minister emphasized that for greater transparency, the computerized draw of lots would be broadcast on television, and a standard operating procedure (SOP) has been established for the process.
In the admission process, 25 percent of seats are designated for students from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Disadvantaged Groups (DG), and children with disabilities. Candidates from families with an annual income below Rs 5 lakh can apply for admission through the EWS category. Such families are required to present an income certificate from the Delhi Revenue Department. Additionally, families with Below Poverty Line (BPL) or Antyodaya Anna Yojana ration cards are also eligible. The disadvantaged group category encompasses children from SC, ST, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), orphans, transgender individuals, and those affected by HIV.
