India must start building towards the 2027 ODI World Cup says Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble urges the Indian cricket team to initiate transition plans after the Champions Trophy, focusing on developing a younger squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo, he emphasized that head coach Gautam Gambhir must make difficult decisions regarding legacy players, regardless of the tournament’s outcome. Kumble noted the importance of integrating younger talent to build a cohesive team that has played together for at least 20-25 matches before the next World Cup. Although Gambhir has excelled in T20Is, his ODI and Test records are less impressive, necessitating strategic planning for future competitions.

Anil Kumble, the former captain of India and a legspinner, emphasizes the necessity for the team to initiate transition strategies following the current Champions Trophy, aiming to cultivate a fresh, younger team that can contend for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
While speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s Matchday show before India’s first match against Bangladesh, Kumble mentioned that head coach Gautam Gambhir will have to make some “difficult decisions,” regardless of how the team performs in the Champions Trophy.

“One could argue that this tournament holds significant importance for a coach who faces tough decisions regarding the shift from established players to newer ones,” Kumble stated. “However, it is the coach’s responsibility to make those challenging choices.

“This tournament could influence where the senior players will stand, and where India might consider implementing those changes. Regardless of winning or losing, these tough decisions need to be made promptly. It’s time to start looking forward in white-ball cricket, with the 2027 World Cup in focus.”

Although Gambhir has an impressive T20I coaching record with 16 victories and only two defeats, his performance in ODIs and Tests has not been as strong. India recently lost a bilateral ODI series to Sri Lanka for the first time in 27 years, and in Tests, they faced a 3-0 defeat at home against New Zealand, followed by a 3-1 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.

Kumble highlighted the importance of Gambhir integrating younger talent into the team and ensuring that the new players get “at least 20-25 matches together” prior to the next ODI World Cup.

“In any World Cup scenario, it’s essential to form a squad that has participated in at least 20 or 25 matches together. This experience helps players grasp the intricacies of match situations and understand whom to depend on. Ideally, after this tournament concludes, attention should shift toward the next World Cup. Will the senior players still be a part of the team? Or shall we provide opportunities for youngsters to lead the team forward in shorter formats and build a cohesive unit? These are critical questions Gambhir must consider.

“He (Gambhir) has a vibrant, young squad with numerous players to select from, so he ought to begin preparing organically for the 2027 World Cup. In T20Is, he’s performed admirably. Suryakumar Yadav has shown exceptional leadership. With two more years until the next World Cup, the new group will require consistent gameplay together to understand key aspects such as batting order, match situations, and tactical approaches.”
