India will certainly feel the absence of Jasprit Bumrah in the Champions Trophy, yet former opener Shikhar Dhawan believes they still have a strong chance of winning the tournament, thanks to their recent performance and a wealth of match-winners available.
Pace bowler Bumrah has been ruled out due to a lower back injury, having carried a substantial workload during India’s five-match Test series against Australia.
“My concern is that they will miss Jasprit Bumrah; there’s no doubt his absence will be felt significantly,” Dhawan noted in an ICC column published on Tuesday.
“In my opinion, he is the best bowler in the world, and his precision is hard to imitate. He also possesses a calm demeanor, which is vital in a major ICC event like this.” Nevertheless, Dhawan is optimistic about Shubman Gill and Harshit Rana making a significant impact in the tournament.
“On the other hand, Harshit Rana has recently joined the team, and I think that’s quite exciting – keep an eye on him, as he could have a breakout tournament.
“I admire his attitude; he is ambitious and not afraid of challenges. We saw during the England series that he is in great form. I have no doubt he will look to capitalize on this opportunity, and if he does, he could add a real X-factor for India.” Based on current form and the strength of the team, Dhawan finds it difficult to consider any other contenders for the title.
“There are numerous reasons to feel positive about India. They have a well-balanced team, especially in batting – a perfect mix of experience and youth. Shubman Gill, in particular, is remarkably consistent and has a crucial role to play. I anticipate he will excel in this tournament.”
