ICC ODI rankings – Shubman Gill and Maheesh Theekshana are the new table toppers ahead of Champions Trophy

Shubman Gill and Maheesh Theekshana have achieved the No. 1 positions in the ICC men’s ODI rankings, with Gill surpassing Babar Azam and Theekshana overtaking Rashid Khan. Gill excelled in the recent 3-0 ODI series victory over England, scoring 87, 60, and 112 for a total of 259 runs at an average of 86.33. His current rating is 796 points. Meanwhile, Theekshana’s strong showing in a series against Australia secured him 680 points. Following them are Rohit Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, and Daryl Mitchell. Additionally, Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka climbed to eighth place.

Shubman Gill and Maheesh Theekshana have ascended to the new No. 1 positions for men’s ODI batter and bowler, respectively, in the latest ICC rankings update released on the first day of the Champions Trophy. Gill has overtaken Babar Azam on the list, while Theekshana has surpassed Rashid Khan in his category.

Gill had a remarkable performance during the home ODI series against England, which India won 3-0, with individual scores of 87, 60, and 112, making him the leading run-scorer in the series. His total of 259 runs came at an impressive average of 86.33 and a strike rate of 103.60. The next highest scorer, Shreyas Iyer, trailed Gill by 78 runs with a total of 181.

This marks the second time Gill has reached the top of the ODI rankings, with his previous stint occurring during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Gill’s ascent has resulted in Babar dropping to second place, as Gill currently holds 796 rating points compared to Babar’s 773.

The top five is rounded out by Rohit Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, and Daryl Mitchell, who has climbed two spots following the tri-series in Pakistan, where he scored 81, 10, and 57.
After the two-ODI series against England, Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka has moved up eight places to No. 8, while Mohammad Rizwan, the captain of Pakistan, has climbed to 15th position.

Although Sri Lanka did not qualify for the Champions Trophy, both Asalanka and Theekshana capitalized on the two-ODI series at home against Australia, with Theekshana returning figures of 4 for 40 and none for 11.

Rashid, who hasn’t participated in an ODI since last December, has dropped to second place but remains close behind Theekshana with 669 rating points compared to Theekshana’s 680. A strong performance in the Champions Trophy could potentially restore him to the top.

Following Theekshana and Rashid in the bowlers’ rankings is Namibia’s Bernard Scholtz, with India’s Kuldeep Yadav and Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi rounding out the top five. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has also made significant gains, moving up five spots to No. 7 after taking five wickets in three ODIs during the Pakistan tri-series.
