Historic Achievement: England’s Ben Duckett Scores 165 Runs Against Australia for the First Time Since 1971

England’s Ben Duckett scored 165 runs in a high-scoring Champions Trophy match against Australia, setting the record for the highest individual score in the tournament’s history. Despite Duckett’s impressive performance, Australia won by five wickets, aided by Josh Inglis’s century and contributions from Alex Carey and Glenn Maxwell. Duckett’s score was notable as he became the first player to reach exactly 165 runs in ODI cricket, completing the range of scores from 0 to 183 achieved in the format. England captain Jos Buttler praised both teams and highlighted Duckett’s consistency as a top-order batter, despite the loss.

Despite suffering a loss in a high-scoring match against Australia during the Champions Trophy on Saturday, England’s batter Ben Duckett made history by achieving a record-breaking feat in ODI cricket. Duckett’s impressive 165 runs set the record for the highest individual score in the history of the ICC Champions Trophy, though his effort was overshadowed by a century from Josh Inglis, whose performance, along with contributions from Alex Carey and Glenn Maxwell, led Australia to a five-wicket victory over England in Lahore.

In doing so, Duckett became the first player in the sport’s history to score precisely 165 runs in an ODI match. With this 165-run achievement, every score from 0 to 183 has now been recorded at least once in ODI cricket history.

Notably, Indian cricket legends such as Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli have all reached the exact score of 183 runs. While all three have captained India in ODI matches, none were leading the team when this specific score was accomplished.

During the post-match presentation, England captain Jos Buttler remarked, “It was a fantastic game, and both teams performed admirably. We achieved a commendable score. Kudos to Australia for their remarkable innings from Josh Inglis to secure the win. I believe 350 is a decent score to defend. The dew was a concern, and the conditions were challenging. Chasing down 350 is a tremendous effort.”

“Duckett showcased exceptional skill. He has been outstanding at the top of the order across all formats and demonstrates remarkable consistency in this format. I’m thrilled with his performance, though it’s unfortunate it came in a losing effort. It’s important to prioritize partnerships over individual performances. By focusing on building those significant partnerships, Root and Duckett were successful. I thought Root and Livingstone bowled exceptionally well today, creating scoring opportunities. We attempted to disrupt the partnership between Inglis and Carey early on, but we couldn’t break through. Sometimes, you just have to commend the opponents,” he concluded.
