Reddit has emerged as a popular platform for employees to share their workplace experiences, including struggles and concerns. A recent post details the experience of a Redditor who was terminated just 20 days into his job at a Gurugram startup. He faced accusations of having an “attitude problem” and was criticized for taking tea breaks with colleagues. Tensions escalated when the employer demanded he work from the director’s cabin and was frustrated by his casual glance outside during discussions. Many Reddit users voiced support for the employee, asserting that the toxic work environment was a place he was better off leaving.
Reddit has become a widely-used platform for employees to voice their job-related struggles, share office experiences, and discuss workplace issues. Numerous subreddits now exist where individuals can anonymously relate their stories, seek guidance, and connect with others facing similar obstacles. Recently, a Redditor recounted his unusual workplace experience with a company that fired him just 20 days after he was hired. The employee, who was at a startup in Gurugram, asserted that from the start, he was labeled as having an “attitude problem” and not being “down to earth”.
“I didn’t get it, but I said I would work on my attitude, even though I didn’t fully grasp why I was being told this,” the Redditor mentioned. He noted that things took a bizarre twist when his employer allegedly took issue with him and two other new hires taking tea breaks together. “Don’t form groups; it’s not good for the company,” the employer reportedly told him.

“After a while, he (the employer) began to have issues with me leaving right at 7 pm. He said, ‘You’re leaving exactly at 7; this is not good,’” the Redditor recalled.
On the 20th day of employment, the employee indicated that tensions peaked. He was instructed to work from the director’s office instead of his own desk. “Dude, who works like that in a cabin all day with your director?” he expressed in his post, voicing his bewilderment.
Later that day, around 7 pm, when the employee casually looked outside the cabin to see if his coworkers were still around for their typical tea break, the employer reportedly became upset. “The director suddenly became angry and said, ‘Why are you looking outside? I’m talking here!’ and told HR to terminate me immediately,” he wrote.

The Redditor shared this story a few days prior. Since then, it has stirred online conversations, with many commenting that the employer’s actions were unreasonable.
“It’s great that you left that place. That’s what’s called a toxic work environment,” one user remarked. “Be glad you got fired from there. Look for a better job. Don’t take it to heart,” another commenter advised.
“Good riddance, bro. You dodged a bullet there,” a third user expressed.
“This used to happen in school when we were sent to the principal’s office for correction. Can’t you see how toxic that culture is? Let me clarify: Leaving on time does NOT indicate you’re a poor employee. It shows you are efficient and have completed your tasks. Being overworked and staying late at the office is NOT a mark of honor. It’s toxic and detrimental to your mental well-being. If your boss encourages this, it signals poor management skills. You’ve saved yourself from years of trauma and toxic bonding with coworkers,” one user commented.
