GoPro Max 360 Receives Its First Update in Five Years: Priced Lower, Yet Still Restricted to 5.6K Video Quality

GoPro has launched the GoPro Max 360, its updated spherical camera, priced at $350, which is $150 less than the original Max. While the design remains unchanged at 5.6K resolution, improvements include compatibility with standard ¼-20 tripod mounts, enhanced Enduro batteries for extreme conditions, and upgraded editing features in the Quick App. New AI tools enable object tracking and digital lens adjustments. Desktop users can utilize a new Reframe plugin for Adobe software, and GoPro Premium subscribers receive unlimited cloud storage for 360 video editing. Despite these updates, the resolution lags behind competitors like Insta360’s recent 8K model.

At the close of 2019, GoPro introduced the Max, marking its second venture into the realm of spherical cameras. Since then, it appeared that the company stepped back from this market with no subsequent releases. Today, they quietly rolled out the GoPro Max 360.

This model doesn’t have a new design – it remains limited to 5.6K resolution – but it offers enhanced mounting options and an improved battery, while being priced at $150 less than the original Max. With it being 2025, the camera includes several AI features as well.

To start, the updated model is compatible with all standard ¼-20 tripod mounts. The mounting point is positioned beneath the folding fingers that GoPro devices typically feature.

The camera now utilizes Enduro batteries with a capacity of 1,600mAh. These batteries can function even in extreme cold conditions, down to -10°C/14°F.

The Quick App boasts several enhancements for easier on-the-go editing of 360 videos. It includes a new AI-based object tracking system. You have the ability to “move” the camera and tweak the digital lens settings using keyframes or automatic transitions. Furthermore, new CameraFx and filter options have been introduced.

If you’re editing on a desktop, you can take advantage of the new Reframe plugin available in Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. Subscribers of GoPro Premium and Premium+ benefit from unlimited cloud storage and can edit 360 videos stored in the cloud.

The newly updated GoPro Max 360 is now available for $350/£350/€400.

Unfortunately, the camera’s video resolution remains unchanged from five years ago at 5.6K. In contrast, rival Insta360 launched the Insta360 X4 last year, marking its first foray into 8K resolution, albeit at a higher price point of $500/€560.
