Google is set to release the third beta of Android 16, expected to be the final one introducing UI changes and features, ahead of a stable launch in June. The first beta included adaptive apps, Live Updates, a new video codec supporting up to 8K, and native night scene detection. The second beta added hybrid auto exposure, precise color temperature adjustments, Ultra HDR support for HEIC images, and access to the Android Graphics Shading Language for advanced graphics. Details on the features of Beta 3 remain unknown, but they will be highlighted at Google I/O on May 20-21.
Google is set to launch the third beta of Android 16 later today. If everything goes smoothly, this will likely be the final beta to introduce UI modifications and new features. Following this, one more beta is expected in April, leading up to the stable release in June.
The first beta featured adaptive apps (which adapt their UI to fit any screen size and shape, advantageous for foldable devices), Live Updates (dynamic notifications for ongoing tasks), a new video codec (Advanced Professional Video supporting up to 8K at 2Gbps), native night scene detection for cameras, and more.
The second beta introduced hybrid auto exposure, precise color temperature adjustments, and support for Ultra HDR images in the HEIC format (with Ultra HDR support for AVIF images also in development). Developers were given access to the Android Graphics Shading Language, facilitating advanced graphic effects. Additionally, Beta 2 rolled out more detailed health and fitness permissions.
At this point, the new features in Android 16 Beta 3 remain unknown, but it is anticipated to be the last update with new additions. All updates for Android 16 will be unveiled at the upcoming Google I/O event scheduled for May 20-21.
