George Pickens and the Pittsburgh Steelers May Be Approaching a Conclusion

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the final year of George Pickens’s rookie contract and aim to retain him, despite acquiring DK Metcalf from the Seahawks. General manager Omar Khan expressed enthusiasm for both players. Reports surfaced during the NFL Draft about possible trade discussions involving Pickens, particularly with the Dallas Cowboys, but no deal occurred. However, NFL Insider James Palmer indicated that the relationship between Pickens and the Steelers is strained, suggesting his time in Pittsburgh might be limited. With 2,841 yards and 12 touchdowns, his departure could happen after this season, although the team lacks a clear replacement plan.

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering the last year of George Pickens’s rookie contract and have expressed a desire to retain him. Even after acquiring DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks, the team kept Pickens through the draft — just barely — and has emphasized that he remains part of their plans this season.

“We’re excited to have George and DK [Metcalf] on board,” general manager Omar Khan stated prior to the NFL Draft. “I believe they’re going to provide a thrilling experience for all to watch. We’re happy to have DK here, but no.”

During the NFL Draft, it was reported that the Steelers had discussions regarding trading Pickens, including talks with teams such as the Dallas Cowboys. However, these conversations did not result in any trades, and it seems those discussions have stalled for now.

NFL Insider James Palmer has now indicated that the relationship between the Steelers and Pickens may not be on solid ground, suggesting that Pickens’s time in Pittsburgh could be coming to a close.

“Many believe his time in Pittsburgh is limited,” Palmer noted. “Things have not gone smoothly behind the scenes between George Pickens and the Pittsburgh Steelers. This raises the question: could he still be with them in 2025? That’s possible. However, many see him leaving after this season.”

Now 24 years old, Pickens has amassed 2,841 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, with his standout season tallying 1,140 yards and five touchdowns, leading the league with an average of 18.1 yards per reception.

The Steelers opted not to draft a wide receiver this spring, leaving Pickens and Metcalf as their primary starters, with Calvin Austin, Roman Wilson, and Robert Woods providing additional depth.

They do not seem to have a contingency plan if they decide to move on from Pickens this offseason, but a departure appears to be a distinct possibility, likely occurring at some point.
